Checkboxing students ['Elite' colleges spurn poor whites, participants in FHA, ROTC, and 4-H]

A study of the admissions patterns of 50 of America's top colleges and universities shows how hard it is to be admitted if you are poor and white. Russell K. Nieli analyzed research done by Princeton professors Thomas Espenshade and Alexandria Radford. Their study found that most private colleges don't want to waste limited scholarship money on students who don't enhance the racial diversity of a campus: "Poor whites are apparently given little weight as enhancers of campus diversity, while poor non-whites count twice in the diversity tally, once as racial minorities and a second time as socio-economically deprived."

But Nieli says diversity concerns make up only part of the explanation for the poor admittance rate of qualified lower-income white students. Schools, he writes, are unwilling to accept students who might turn them down on financial grounds. A lower acceptance rate could lower the school's overall ranking by U.S. News & World Report and others.

But there's more. Apparently the elite colleges are biased against some red state/rural activities: Participation in Future Farmers of America, ROTC, and 4-H Clubs, especially at the leadership level, is the kiss of death for kids with Ivy-colored dreams.

Make that . . . Elites spurn participants in FFA, ROTC, 4-H . . ..

What ignominy for Harvard or Brown to have a farm kid in its student body.

People who can bring in grant money, Alumni donations (sports), and can pay their own way. Poor non-minority people are sucking hind teat.

GLSEN no doubt adds a lot of heft to the Ivy application, too.

I’ll bet my son’s Eagle Rank in Boy Scouts won’t help in the elite universities, either.

I think the Ivy universities are way overrated. Nothing wrong with state schools.

Basically for a white going to an elite school, if he/she drops out and cannot afford to cotinue payments, the school is out the money. If a non-white drops out, the government is on the hook for tuition.

This is all the reason for on-line schools and defunding private universities.

“I’ll bet my son’s Eagle Rank...”

A neighbor told me that they were advised to keep that out of the application process. It use to be seen as a very distinguished honor; however, it is now seen as a flag for conservative viewpoints. Very sad. Just a thought.

This is the “informal” policy now, of keeping out the ideologically “inferior”, from the channels that lead to positions of power.

Look for it to become more formalized (unless we turn society around),
and then to become outright LAW.

Christian? Conservative?
You are relegated to menial jobs.
Only the “elite” are allowed access to the ruling class’ halls of power.

The last Ivy League school to win a share of the national championship was Princeton, in 1950. Yale was last in contention for the crown in 1927, and Harvard in 1920.

The kids I know in FFA, 4H, and JROTC are better off not going to these pseudo intellectual snake pits.

Why ruin a good kid?

I guess that depends on what you consider an "elite university" if you are referring to Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Brown, etc. then you are probably right.

I would venture to say he should look towards something like a Hillsdale college and actually get a great education. Sure the "elite" sheepskins will garner more attention initially but he will actually know things rather than thinking he knows things. Combined with his clear work ethic and solid grounding, evidenced by his wonderful accomplishment of being an Eagle Scout, he will soon be running circles around the pantywaist that the other schools churn out.
