Dallas bombing plotter Hosam Smadi sentenced to 24 years in prison

A federal judge today sentenced a Jordanian national who tried to blow up a downtown Dallas skyscraper to 24 years in prison, mostly rejecting defense claims that he was mentally ill and unduly influenced by law enforcement agents.

Hosam "Sam" Smadi faced up to 30 years in prison under a plea agreement accepted by U.S. District Judge Barbara Lynn. He will be deported to Jordan once he serves his time.

"I can't for the life of me figure out what moved you in this direction," the judge said in delivering the sentence.

"You got some encouragement along the way," she added, referring to FBI agents' interactions with Smadi, "but your actions were yours."

Before the sentence was delivered, Smadi was apologetic, addressing the judge in halting English.

"I’m very sorry for my actions." said Smadi, dressed in an orange prison jumpsuit with his hair grown out to shoulder length. "I could not live with myself if I hurt anybody."

The ruling came on the second day of Smadi's sentencing hearing in federal district court. He was arrested on Sept. 24, 2009, by FBI agents who said he dialed a cellphone that he thought would trigger a bomb in the parking garage under the 60-story Fountain Place on Ross Avenue.

Smadi, 20, later pleaded guilty before Lynn. Today, the judge told him to reflect on his crimes every day of his sentence.

"I want you to think about those people in that building whose lives you were prepared to end," she said, referring to the approximately 2,000 people working at Fountain Place on the day he was arrested.

“I can’t for the life of me figure out what moved you in this direction,” the judge said.

Try a little harder, Judge.

If I had to place a bet (which I would be loathe to do as I don't find it in the least interesting), I'd put my money on the “Better Living Through Chemistry” crowd. The more I read (and I read an awful lot), the more I hear of heinous crimes being committed by people who are higher than a kite on some pretty amazing substances.

It's been stated in Iraq and Afghanistan (by our military), by military investigations of American soldiers who do things like hunt and chop up civilians (recently in the news) and by those wonderful folks south of the border, who chop heads off and kill mayors and commit mass murders of horrendous brutality (check any news outlet any day of the week). I dunno’ but the chief "accelerant" in all these cases seems to be chemical additives. Yet we all ignore the obvious. We're all chasing our tails. We can't call things what they are anymore and we have to accept everything. I don't and neither should anyone else. Call it what it is and stop making us crazy by calling it what it isn't. It's national insanity. We used to put people who used these things in places where they couldn't hurt anyone else. We used to call things unacceptable. We're all getting woozy from all the PCspeak and we're killing ourselves with the political correctness.

I can’t for the life of me figure out how, after so many examples of Muslim murderous hatred towards America and the West, we still have so many stupid people who do not understand what we’re up against.
