Upgrade kits for M4 Sniper Rifle come in 2011

The Army expects to field the new sniper rifle, the XM2010, by January. And conversion kits for the M4 rifle will come next year.

A panel of program managers from Program Executive Office Soldier met Oct. 14 at the Pentagon to discuss the status of several programs in the PEO's portfolio. Included in the discussion was the status of the new sniper rifle, development of the Operation Enduring Freedom Camouflage Pattern uniform for use in Afghanistan, Mounted Soldier System development, and the improvement program for the M4 carbine.

Col. Douglas Tamilio, program manager for Soldier Weapons, said the Army will do a request for proposal in the next three or four months to complete the Army's acquisition objective for M4 rifles. That RFP will include more than 14,000 M4A1 rifles -- an improvement over the M4 Soldiers currently use.

"What the M4A1 gives our Soldiers is a heavy barrel and fully automatic -- that's what the field is asking for," Tamilio said. The M4A1 also features ambidextrous controls.

The Army already has a contract with Colt to produce the rifles. The second contract, in the next fiscal quarter, will help the Army complete its AAO and will include additional rifles for both foreign military sales and to meet other Army requirements. Tamilio also said the Army will work a contract to procure some 65,000 kits in FY 2011 to convert M4s already in the field to the M4A1

Off track here,,, I picked up a Mark V 30-378 with a McMillan stock. Been loading 100 grains RL22 180 X bullets. It shoots ok, but nothing spectacular,(I have a 40 year old cheap Savage that shoots better). Are you happy with the McMillan stock? Do you think it really makes a difference?

I love the 7 mag too, mine's a Ruger. In my opinion, if you have to shoot more than 20 rounds a day, there is no finer caliber. Yes, yes, the 300 mag, etc. has more punch and velocity, but go shoot one 20 times and see how your shoulder feels.

Weapons have to be practical too and not disable the shooter. I'm a bigger guy and the 7 mag is all I can continuously fire and tolerate the concussion and shoulder impact.

.308 is a fine caliber too, but the 7 mag shoots flatter and faster and no one will live though a well placed shot and the 7 mag gives you the best chance at that.

I hear that. I used to own a rifle chambered for the .338 win magnum. A great round but twenty rounds in one session was enough.

Is it just me or is the article about a new sniper rifle and also about mods to upgrade M4 rifles to the M4A1 but the title claims the M4 is a sniper rifle?

Yeah, I love the McMillan stock...I ordered it with that stock, so I don’t know the difference between the original and that, but my other .300 magnum is a Ruger all-weather and the Sendero stock makes a world of difference.

30-378, I heard that kicks like a elephant! We carried .375 H&H’s in the Forest Service, and man...those were brutal, isn’t the 30-378 worse?

Never heard of a Sendero, have to look it up. I have my own back porch range, built a heavy duty T bench with 2X10's and shoot off one of those green X style tack driver bags; like it better than a vise type setup. Had a Hyskore and didn't work for me. My 30-378 holds a 2.5 inch pattern at 300 yards which is OK but I guess I expected better after comparing it to that old beat up Savage 270 which is scary close.

My 30-378 has a brake and feels like a 243 to me; though quite loud. Me thinks the 30-378 reaches out more than my 7 mag.

We live along the Yukon at near border with Canada (Yukon Charlie) have too many bear and I usually carry a 338 BAR when up on summit. Have a S&W 460, 5 inch and with 395 corbons, it rips my arm off; almost get flash burns; but it will put quarter size holes through 3/8 plate; a 44 won't even scratch the steel.

I lived in Alaska for a few years: Seward, Moose Pass and Anchorage.

I worked for the Forest Service in Moose Pass, I was stationed out of the Kenai Lake Work Center. The first year I built trails, then in following years I maintained the trails then fought fires.

It was great...that was where we carried .375 H&H’s against Brownies.

What a joy it must be to live in the bush by the Yukon.

Wait...I just re-read what you wrote, You’ve shot a 5” 460?! Wow! I find Ruger Redhawks in 44 magnum to be too stiff!

Are you a Native? I worked with a lot of Tlingits, Yupiks and Eskimos in Seward and Moose Pass, and a few in Anchorage.

Yeah, author seems a bit confused.

I want to know where I can get the new M4 upper.

.308 is still plenty for most practical purposes; looking at getting the Remington 700 AAC (suppressor-friendly model).

Wife and I have our teaching degrees, have taught in a couple villages. We live 4 miles out of Eagle which is on the Yukon, not Eagle River. Been here in Eagle 10 years, taught in the MatSu and east of Tok. Hard to leave once you get use to the place, but kids now at UAA & UAF, too quiet at the house without any kids nowadays.

I was once offered a slot down Yakutat, signed contract, fished Situk, then wifey refused to go there; tough place just the same. Anyway, we ended up here and probably will stay. Ya have quite a few kooks out this way, kind of people that get themselves locked up pretty regular for dumb stuff if they live in Fairbanks. No law enforcement, taxes, regulations, organized local govt out this way, all kinds of freedom; we like it.

I'm close to all the local Indians, spend more time with them than any White People around here. Just hate watching them die out from the alcohol.

I have two S&W 460 mags, a 10 inch and the 5 inch. The 5 inch is awful to shoot but the 10 inch is quite accurate. I saw the previous owner hit a 12 inch target at 400 yards every other shot; I wish I could do the same off sandbags, but can't.

We had some probs of late with fed cops down Yukon Charlie, they beat up, handcuffed 70 year old resident and now state is involved. Sad, cause the feds have worked quite hard to get along out this way over the years; all down the drain now. Probably just another Obama appointee.

I always wanted to live in the bush, but other than backpacking when I patrolled trails, I never did.
