Nevada GOP Senate nominee Sharron Angle said at a recent event with Hispanic high school students that some of the students in attendance looked a little more Asian to her.
Angle has landed herself in hot water for a previously reported remark from the event, in which she claimed that she was not sure whether her illegal immigration ad featured Hispanics.
But on Monday morning, the Las Vegas Suns John Ralston pulled another nugget from the meeting Angle said that some of the members of the Hispanic Student Union looked like they might be Asian.
So thats what we want is a secure and sovereign nation, and, you know, I dont know that all of you are Latino. Some of you look a little more Asian to me. I dont know that, Angle said, according to video posted by the Nevada paper. What we know, what we know about ourselves is that we are a melting pot in this country.
Angle then claimed that she too has been confused as a different ethnicity, seemingly in an attempt to illustrate her melting pot point.
Ive been called the first Asian legislator in our Nevada State Assembly, Angle said.
Angle spokesman Jarrod Agen explained to POLITICO that "Sharron is making the point that this country is a melting pot, and you cannot judge people based on stereotypes or the way they look."
In reference to Angle's claim that she has been confused as being of Asian descent, Agen said that "when she was in the Legislature, a reporter mistakenly referred to Sharron as being of Asian descent. Again, making the point to the students that you can't judge people based on first glance."
This story is starting to get some legs and is on a lot of the various news sites today.
The MSM is desperate to avoid the real issues and will always avoid these stories when its one of their Democrats
Awkward, but not even close to race related things Harry Reid has said. If Reid wants to go there then by all means, bring it on Harry!
Asians came over the Bering strait and populated the Americas. They give native “Hispanics” their Asiatic features. Never mind that “Hispanic” comes from Spain, which is another matter altogether.
Voting has started desperate dummies. Nice try though.
So?
My DIL has been mistaken for Japanese, Bhutanese, and Indian.
Was she offended? No. And this was in Asia.
Get a life people.
I’m so sick of people pretending outrage over something so incredibly minor.
lol
Classic!
Some do. Have you seen some Peruvians? I even had a Salvadoran client whose family called him “Chino” because he looked Asian.
I live in Honduras six months a year — and I used to have a stunning Chinese girlfriend and I can tell you that she is right. Many of the stunningly beautiful Honduran women have decidedly Oriental looking features. Why anyone would consider that derogatory is simply beyond me. The statement is fine. The liberal reaction insults both the Orientals and the Hispanics. If the left continues to make an issue of it and Sharon thinks it is deleterious, she should ask her critics why they consider her observation an insult.

I’ve been saying Mexicans look like middle easterners for years.
I agree with her, so what? Many Mexicans have sort of an Oriental look. Much ado about nothing.
Funny how quickly the media dropped Reid’s “negro dialect” thing but now will run with this thing. That said, Angle needs to realize she’s running in a political race where the media is going to do an anal probe of everything that comes out of her mouth and therefore she needs to learn to not say everything that comes into her head.
It’s racist to see racial distinctions... or to comment on them... she should have said “some of you look homogenized”... but then they would have just edited the video by cutting off the “genized”.
Yeah—but—you just don’t say stuff like this when you’re a candidate, especially when you’re a Republican candidate. Just because something may seem true doesn’t mean it’s wise to say it. She’s got to control the diahrrea of the mouth. She’s so close to winning this thing. It would be a shame if she lost it now merely because she’s too unguarded in what she says.
"My staff tells me not to say this, but I'm going to say it anyway," said Reid in his remarks. "In the summer because of the heat and high humidity, you could literally smell the tourists coming into the Capitol. It may be descriptive but it's true."
Harry Reid in December 2008 on the benefits of the new Capitol Visitors Center to the imperial class.
No doubt some “Hispanics,” an artificial category, do look Asian, another contrived category, given their Indian heritage. The Indians came across the Siberian land bridge in search of game. They were immigrants to North America.
