Gun owners must consider more than NRA grades
Gun Rights Examiner ^ | October 15, 2010 | David Codrea

Posted on 10/15/2010 9:36:25 AM PDT by Neil E. Wright

Those who follow gun blogs know there's a recurring debate between gun owners who prefer National Rifle Association political strategies and those who challenge them. I'd like to address a few of the more contentious points I see being raised on blogs and discussion boards:

Gun Owners of America grades candidates on issues that have nothing to do with the Second Amendment, for instance, they counted a vote against Candidate X because he/she voted for what they call "anti-gun Obamacare." That has nothing to do with guns.

Harry Reid didn't think so when he offered an amendment to the health care bill--one, incidentally, that would do nothing to protect gun owners caught afoul of any of the innumerable patchwork anti-gun edicts that exist throughout the land. And despite the claim that with this "victory" we have nothing else gun-related to worry about from the health care takeover, if one willfully defies it to get standing to challenge its Constitutionality (or even does not but is adjudicated willfully noncompliant anyway), a whole new opportunity to be convicted on felony charges and to become a "prohibited person"--barred from owning guns forever--has just been created.

Reaching out to "pro-gun" Democrats is prudent politics. The "R" in NRA does not stand for "Republican."

I'm the last one to suggest undeserving Republicans should be supported because the Democrat will really hurt us. I've been out there for years asking what incentive they will ever have to change if we continue to vote for what our fear tells us is "the lesser of two evils." Even if a Democrat opponent is anti-gun, to reward a Republican who does not deserve it simply guarantees more bad behavior--better to take the loss now and make an example for others to see.

As a Life Member of the NRA, I do pay close attention to their grades, but I only use them as tie-breakers.

As the old saying goes, All politics are local, and I take my candidate research very seriously. I will investigate a candidate to the nth degree, and if I find very little about them, I will go to the NRA for their input. If and only if there is a tie will I use their grades.

I vote my guns, but there are local issues that are often more important than just guns. It is important that we all vet our candidates before pulling a lever, or we are going to end up with another Kenyan mulatto in the WH.

“I don’t need the NRA to tell me how to vote.”

Exactly! This is just BS!

I don’t need the NRA to tell me how to vote.

That might be true, but candidates spend billions of dollars with the media to tell people how to vote. They do this because it is effective.

Good question. Who do you think will side with the marxists/socialists and their agenda in Washington D.C. more?

Then what can be done, (once they're in) and then they use their office to promote anti-gun stances. Example: All the spent brass that was sent to China rather than allowed on the American market. Sure glad I bought all the 223 my grandkids will ever need 20 years back. Or of late those surplus M1's from Korea. Does anybody remember back when K-mart sold old military guns for 27 bucks each, boy weren't those the days? Or when you could get SKS's for 90 bucks each if you bought 5. Those days only occur when you had a Repub Pres.

The only dem I vote for is our local state legislator, an Indian who lives in a downriver village, hunts, cares about the Yukon, and could give a heck what the fed's say. So I'm guilty of it too I guess.

The NRA isn’t getting another cent of my money. I’m far from rich and I’m sure they won’t miss it but the principle stands. Anyone know any conservative gun organizations?

I hate Kasich however I believe a strong and resounding message must be sent to Obama. A rat Governor is a dangerous thing and Governors are breeding grounds for future Presidents.

Ohio has lost a plethora of jobs, I’ll probably hold my nose and vote for Kasich.

He just better focus on the economy and leave gun control alone.

I agree, consider him a place holder till a true conservative shows up. Good luck, from your neighbor next door, in W.Va.

We surly must consider other factors.

Such as:

The election of any democrat helps enable socialists, communists and other ultra leftist democrats like Obama, Pelosi, Reid and so many others who defy the constitution and laugh at us for thinking it is wrong to do so.

Therefore, no democrat, no matter what their personal 2nd amendment voting record, should ever be supported by the NRA or any responsible person or organization concerned about the restoration of a constitutional government.
