Sure it was. They just weren't open about it. LBJ was no moderate. Uncle Walter Kronkite was no middle-of-the-roader. The NY Times has been a leftist rag for about forever.

We, the rank and file of the Republican Party, and our leadership both in and out of Congress had better make it absolutely clear to any waffling RINOs in the Senate that if they don’t stand with the majority the party and filibuster anything that comes up in the lame duck session that a majority of the GOP caucus does not support, they will face primary challengers with the backing of the party during their next reelection bid, and will be on their own if they get the nomination. Of course, we should also, distasteful, though it may be, let it be known that if the same RINOs (I’m mostly thinking the Maine twins) show loyalty to the party during the lame duck session and the next Congress, they will earn the support of the party. (Actually for New England Republicans, even a two-year long solidly conservative voting record should be enough to expunge the “INO”.)

It's an old expression that means "to wreak havoc" My father's contemporaries, WWII Vets, used it all the time.
