Gay groups and women's group are calling on Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.) to apologize for comments he made Friday about who should and shouldn't be in classrooms.
At a 2004 debate, DeMint declared that openly gay people should not be teaching public school. "We need the folks that are teaching in schools to represent our values," he said. DeMint later added that he "would have given the same answer when asked if a single woman, who was pregnant and living with her boyfriend, should be hired to teach my third grade children."
At the time, the Senate candidate apologized: "[S]ometimes my heart disengages from my head and I say something I shouldn't - and that's what happened yesterday. I clearly said something as a dad that I just shouldn't have said. And I apologize." His campaign manager added that DeMint was raised by a single mother and was not opposed to unwed mothers teaching.
But last week, DeMint said that he had been privately encouraged by reaction to his words.
"[N]o one came to my defense," he said at at a rally. "But everyone would come to me and whisper that I shouldn't back down. They don't want government purging their rights and their freedom to religion."
Jimmy LaSalvia of the gay Republican group GOProud told CBS News that he saw DeMint's comment as a reaffirmation of his original statement -- that gays and unwed mothers should not be allowed to teach children. "I don't know anybody in 2010 who thinks that," he said.

“Gay groups and women’s group are calling on Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.) to apologize for comments he made Friday about who should and shouldn’t be in classrooms.”
Even if he offered it, which is unlikely, it could not be heard for all of the applause from parents, who have far, far more than ‘skin’ in the ‘game’.
I am so tired of the “Save the Gay People” crap. Seriously.
Why did that guy’s name have to be an anagram of Saliva? Eeeeeeew
Agreed.
This is a pre-emptive strike. The DemonRats are scared to death that the Senate will be lost. And they FEAR Jim DeMint as a potential Majority Leader. They do not fear Mitch McConnell. There will be an all-out attack on DeMint now to diminish his chances of becoming Leader.
If my kids’ school hired an openly gay teacher, I would pull the out of school.
Why is this gay crap the most important thing right now? Really? Its insane...
I’d make the headline more honest:
Jim DeMint criticized for comments on OPENLY gay and OPENLY sexually active single teachers
I remember a time when the vast majority of Americans would agree with DeMint.
1955?
“We need the folks that are teaching in schools to represent our values”
Correct!
In the old days that would not happen, nor would openly gay teachers be tolerated. We are more tolerant now, but are our schools better? Do they serve the children better? I don't think they do.
Bingo.
SC voters have given him permission to speak freely.
DeMint is just the one to take on this PC crap head on.
I completely agree with Sen. DeMint. As a public school employee I am very frustrated at how many of these liberal loons have access to the minds of young children. Despicable that school districts seem to want a high proportion of these people in the classroom.
Yep. Through about 1965.
That's why I keep sending him money.
DeMint, Pence, Bachmann, Bolton, Palin, Marco Rubio, Paul Ryan...
That was a halfwit remark but good he apologized. I think he’s getting overconfident from having one of America’s stupidest people as his opponent.
The indoctrination of homosexual behavior into even elementary schools has been pushed into first place as the most important issue facing mankind. Forget about nuclear war. The main thing that occupies the minds of sex compulsives is sexual activity. Even an amateur psychologist can figure out that their continual cry of “gay pride” is really a cry for attention and help. What kind of person wants everyone in the town square to know and celebrate what he does in bed?
Shame and modesty and the nuclear family and Judaeo-Christian civilization have been under steady attack for the past 40 years.
