Federal judge upholds key provisions of health care law

A federal judge in Detroit today upheld key provisions of President Barack Obama’s landmark health reform law. In a 20-page decision, U.S. District Judge George Steeh refused to issue an injunction to halt preparations for putting federal health reforms into full effect in 2014, a law known as the Affordable Care Act passed by Congress in March.

George Caram Steeh, III is an Article III federal judge for the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan. He joined the court in 1998 after being nominated by President Bill Clinton.

Legal education and experience

A native of Ann Arbor Steeh graduated from the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor earning both his Bachelor's and Juris Doctor Degrees in 1969 and 1973.

After Law School, Steeh was part of the Genesee County Prosecutor's Office from 1973 to 1980, first as a Assistant prosecuting attorney from 1973 to 1978 before being promoted First assistant prosecuting attorney from 1978-1980. For eight years from 1980 to 1988, Steeh became a private practice attorney in Michigan before being elected in the Macomb County Board of Commissioners in 1986 and served till 1989 when Steeh started his judicial career as first a Judge in Michigan District 41-B Court from 1989 to 1990 and was elected judge for the 16th District Circuit Court from 1990-1998.

Federal judicial career

On the unanimous recommendation of Senators Carl Levin and William Riegle, Jr., Steeh was nominated by President Bill Clinton on September 24, 1997 to a seat vacated by Barbara Hackett as Hackett assumed senior status. Steeh was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on May 13, 1998 on a Senate vote and received commission on May 22, 1998.

But federal attorneys say Congress can regulate interstate commerce and has imposed laws for more than 200 years requiring men to buy muskets and ammunition, for example.

Muskets? Really? I just cant wrap my arms around that defense.

Where do they find these "federal attorneys" that are unable to distinguish between an exercise of the power to provide for the national defense, and the regulation of commerce?
