NEW YORK -- New Yorkers on food stamps would not be allowed to spend them on sugar-sweetened drinks under an obesity-fighting proposal being floated by Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Gov. David Paterson.

Bloomberg and Paterson planned to announce Thursday that they are seeking permission from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which administers the nation's food stamp program, to add sugary drinks to the list of prohibited goods for city residents receiving assistance.

ThAT is not up to the government to determine. THAT is a personal choice on what is cut when times are tough.

Going on food stamps is a choice.

“Going on food stamps is a choice.”

Yes, it is and so is WHO YOU VOTE FOR that advocates government dependence.

YOU can make a difference too!

They already have criteria for WIC (you’ve seen the “WIC approved” labels in stores, right?),

I don’t see it as too big of a step to apply criteria to what you can buy with food stamps. You can’t buy smokes or liquor with them now.

“If they want to purchase the non nutritious food stuffs then they can pay for it out of their own pocket. I would rather junk food be forbidden while soap, toilet paper and tooth paste be allowed for purchase as they are basic needs while junkfood isn’t.”

So you want to DICTATE what they can buy.

Will you DICTATE whether or not they should buy store brands or name brands ?

Will you DICTATE how much toilet paper they can buy?

Will you DICTATE what brand and how much toothpaste they can buy?

Will you DICTATE whatever they buy must be on sale?

Will you hire MORE GOVERNMENT people to enforce your personal RULES?

Will you DICTATE what is “nutritious” versus what is NOT “nutritious”?

I like ice cream, would you allow me to buy that?
Would the calcium level be acceptable to YOU?
BTW, I'm not on food stamps.

You're have mentality that is no different than Communist countries. Personally speaking, I have had my fill of that through Obama.

Are they planning on banning Twinkies as well? I thought it was just sugar drinks. I am surprised you are all for the government controlling another aspect of citizens’ lives. And I have known quite a few skinny people who live on junk food. You paint with a broad brush.

“It’s not the same thing as control. Foodstamps are not a right, it’s a government program that is poorly run. Why should the taxpayers be burdened to pay for people’s junk food habits?”

It is what is in place NOW. Yes, it is poorly run. It is not up to ME or YOU to DICTATE what their DIET should be while on this program. If you would like these entitlement programs removed, then VOTE OUT THE SOBS that want more people dependent on them! Make it an issue! If they want to buy JUNK FOOD, so be it!

“If the person who is receiving food stamps wants to purchase non nutritious foodstuff then they have the right to pay out of their own pockets.”

Again, it is not up to YOU or ME to tell them what they can eat. It’s shocking to see someone want to DICTATE another persons diet.

“Foodstamps should be set up like the WIC voucher system where it is limited to nutritional foods only. The point is to provide essential nutrition to maintain health.”

I am not fmailiar with WIC so I can’t comment on that.

Could you tell me more about that?

What is the difference between WIC and the food stamp program?

Who is ellible for each program - in twenty words or less.

When they are buying food with my money, I absolutely get to have a say over what they can and cannot buy. They made the choice to go on food stamps, they can live with the consequences of that choice. If they don't like it, don't go on food stamps.

A lot of people now receiving food stamps have worked their entire lives, only to lose their jobs as they were shipped overseas. They have paid taxes their whole working lives. Who are you to tell them what they can eat? More people than ever in America are receiving food stamps (no, I am not). This holier-than-thou crap is disgusting. You could end up on food stamps some day.

I’m in southeast Texas, maybe a little higher than average for the rest of the state.

Why?

What does that have to do with weather or not people should be paying for other people’s luxury.?

I pay taxes. I am against the war in Afghanistan. My tax money goes to support something I am totally against. Guess what - it doesn’t matter what I think. And it doesn’t matter what you want people to buy with their food stamps. Have you ever received food stamps?

I hate being in line at the grocery store and some with a cart full of good food whip out their EBT card, then drive off in a nice car. But I don’t have any way of knowing their real situation and neither do you. At some point we need to mind our own business.

Unemployed people often need food stamps. They are allotted a specific amount each month for food. It doesn’t change whether they buy steak or beans and rice. Why do you care what choice they make? Just hope you never need food stamps.

I don't "hope". I act so that I will never need food stamps.

What do you want to bet the folks to which you refer are not abusing the system as we/I have described?

Meanwhile, we all have been in line behind some welfare queen that whips out the EBT card to buy junk food, prepared food, and hamburger for her dog, then goes out and puts it all in a newer vehicle than you, the taxpayer, drive.

Unemployed people often need food stamps.

Want and need are two different things

Why do you care what choice they make?

Why don't you? You're paying for it

Just hope you never need food stamps.

Save it. It's a crutch meant to keep people down and make phony heroes out of those who condone the sham
