Tancredo for Governor (Rocky Mountain Right)
Rocky Mountain Right ^ | October 5, 2010 | Rocky Mountain Right

Some Republicans have fretted that Dan Maes must be supported in order to keep him above 10% and prevent the Republican Party from becoming a "minor party" under state law. These concerns are overblown and would only be an issue until 2014 while redistricting could potentially shut out Republicans until 2020. This is a classic example of winning a battle while losing the war.

The most concerning problem that comes with "minor party" status is a quirk in campaign finance law. GOP state candidates can currently collect two checks from donors - one for the general election and another for the primary election even if they do not have an opponent - "minor party" candidates cannot collect a primary election check unless they are in a contested race. This is something that can be easily sidestepped by enterprising activists and party officials placing their own names on the primary ballot while not campaigning in order to allow the "real" candidate the benefit of increased fundraising. This solution is no more intellectually dishonest than the current system of collecting checks to fight an imaginary opponent.

The other major concern associated with "minor party" status is ballot placement. While it is true that Republican candidates no longer having top placement on ballots could impact some local races, for the most part voters will still find the Republican candidate in top-tier races. Some concern has been raised that voters will defect en masse to the Constitution Party candidate in 2012 and give Colorado's electoral votes to Barack Obama. This is a preposterous scenario. Again, this will only be a problem until 2014 while redistricting will have effects until 2020. None of these are compelling enough reasons to keep the Maes campaign on life support.

If GOP becomes a minor party in CO then:
1.) GOP richly deserves it for their RINO policies and agenda.
2.) A necessary warning shot will have been fire across GOP ship’s bow.

I am 100% OK with this outcome, especially if Trancrado can get elected. Conservative principles First, GOP RINO agenad a far, far distant second.

With Tancredo’s views on muzzies and illegal aliens, he should be president. H*ll- he should be president of the friggin’ universe.

Aren’t there previous Maes-type candidates? I know the Democrat nominee for governor of SC was disqualified in 1974, and that made possible the electon of the first ever Republican governor, but James Edwards didn’t or couldn’t run for reelection. Sometimes a party does shoot itself in the foot, and uninformed voters are usually behind the problem, plus wrong-headed “party leaders.”

Obama will be strong in CO in 2012 if he runs again. Pople there always like to be “trendy.”

The GJ Sentinel published a story today that cited the funding and the Rasmussen Poll and dear old Dan Maes claiming if only
Mr.Tancredo would drop out he would have all that money and
51% of the vote. typical political partisan thinking—not unlike the stuff spewed by former Gov. Owens who reportedly said he’d vote for the Party not for Mr.Tancredo.(from a different news story)

People in Colorado have proven downright STUPID as seen when
the annointed Kenyan campaigned here.Michael Savage once wondered if it was something in the air out here-the high
altitude or something. Others have suggested it is the high
rate of transplants from th eland of fruits and nuts.

It is simple: all GOP voters should swallow their pride and dump the loser Maes. He cannot, will not win. So, just switch to Tom and if he is elected, welcome him back to the GOP. Dems do it all the time. Suppose Tom could win by doing this, it would aid the state redistricting not being abused by the liberal Dems under The Hick.

Dan Maes needs to drop out of the race and endorse Tom Tancredo. I think Tancredo wins it easily if Maes isn't in the race. I wish some of the more popular Republican\Conservatives would endorse and campaign for Tancredo. I bet he wishes he hadn't attacked Sarah Palin now, because she could probably help his campaign. But whatever he's said in the past is pretty much irrelevant to me because it's him or Hickenlooper, and that's not a difficult decision for me.

People need to contact Maes and let him know that even many of those who supported, and voted for him in the primary now want him to drop out for the sake of Colorado. I would also like to know what's going through the mind of the people who still support Maes when he has no chance whatsoever of winning, and was caught in a ridiculous lie. The fact that he won't drop out now just shows what kind character he has. A vote for Maes is a vote for the ultra liberal Hickenlooper.

I agree with you 100%.
If Dan Maes has any conservative integrity at all, he should drop out and indorse Trancredo!
If he does, he will gain much respect, and could be a senate or Congressional candidate in 2012! If he does not, he should never be given a conservative podium again.
