Former White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuels first day on the campaign trail in the Chicago mayoral race didnt exactly go as planned.
Under a glaring national media spotlight, Emanuel was seen getting blown off by commuters during a stop at a train station and caught dousing his hands with sanitizer immediately after greeting Chicagoans at another campaign event.
The media coverage was less than stellar, with the Chicago Sun-Times questioning whether Emanuel meets the residency requirement and The New York Times spotlighting a photo of a voter placing her hand back inside her jacket when he reached out for a handshake.
POLITICO reported that the former chief of staffs Glad to be home video was actually filmed in Washington, delighting the conservative blogosphere, while yet another report from the nonpartisan Sunlight Foundation provided fodder to his opponents as it detailed the many visits to Emanuels White House office by members of Chicagos rich and powerful set.
And then there was Valerie Jarrett, the Chicago power player turned White House adviser, who dodged an opportunity to endorse Emanuel during an interview Monday.
I don't think anybody is interested in my choice for mayor of Chicago, Jarrett said on MSNBCs Morning Joe. My focus is right here, and he hasn't even announced yet. I think this weekend he announced he's doing his listening tour; allowing people in Chicago all around the neighborhoods to tell him what they think. So, we'll be watching closely from afar.
Asked by Times Mark Halperin if she was not willing to endorse Emanuel, Jarrett responded: "I think the president said it best, 'He'll be a terrific, terrific mayor if he's elected.'
Representatives for Emanuels camp have begun fighting back against the report that he may not be eligible to run citing two Chicago Board of Elections rulings that seem to be in their favor. Residency questions aside, the longtime political operative may have a way to go in courting the citys voters.
Emanuel, though, has said he knew hed have to negotiate a difficult path to become mayor, and in his introductory video he framed himself as the kind of tough leader the city needs.
We need leadership thats tough enough to say no when it needs to be said and smart enough to know what government should do and also what it cant do, he said.

LOL don’t like the unwashed masses who pay your salary and for your creature comforts do you? Must be tough to come crashing back to Earth.

Excerpt:
Rahm Emanuel got a mostly warm reception Monday as he greeted commuters and diners on the Near South Side, Park Manor and Pilsen on the first day of his listening tour to succeed Mayor Daley.
But as the closely guarded secret of where he would be appearing Monday began to leak out, protesters flocked to Izolas restaurant on 79th Street and Nuevo Leon in Pilsen to heckle him.
Get out of our neighborhood, a protester holding a Dump Quinn in 2010 banner shouted at Emanuel as he left Izolas.
What a loser.
If I had to shake his hand I would be reaching for bleach next.
It couldn’t happen to a more destructive clown!
I'm from Chicago.
“Date won't sit too well with da people!”

They are mostly just being polite.
He’s not going to be the mayor.
Maybe he should put on his Tutu, retrofro and plie’ through the crowds.....
What’s with Democrats and their “listening tours”????
Hillary Clinton did a listening tour of New York when she decided to become a carpet bagger and run for the Senate from there. Apparently she wanted to be seen as listening to the people, hearing their concerns, etc. The whole thing was a PR stunt, but it worked for Hillary.
Caroline Kennedy did a listening tour also, during her attempt to get the appointment to fill Hillary’s unexpired Senate term.
And now Rahm is doing a listening tour.
What’s the point of a listening tour to try to show you are listening to the people, when it’s all PR and not genuine???
Personally I’d much rather have Rhambo as mayor of Chitown than any direct involvement with the fedgov.
If he doesn’t become mayor, he’s probably back in Congress.
“Emanuel was ... caught dousing his hands with sanitizer immediately after greeting Chicagoans at another campaign event.”
You guys need to give Emanuel a break here. You see, he was actually doing Chicagoans a favor by using the hand sanitizer which would protect those same Chicagoans from any contamination carried by Emanuel.
I think they got this from Clinton. He lost the governor’s race in Arkansas to a republican in 1980. The first republican governor since reconstruction. For the next two years he supposedly went around the state apologizing and won re-election in 1982.
When he ran for re-election in 1990 he swore he wouldn’t run for president. When he did run he said he went around the state asking people to let him back out of his promise.
Clinton was one travellin’ s.o.b.
...caught dousing his hands with sanitizer immediately after greeting Chicagoans ....
&&&
The Chicagoans are the ones who needed the sanitizer after touching that thug.
But it does not really matter how badly Emmanuel’s attempts went; he will rally union and other thugs to fix the vote.
I DID shake his hand at an event in May of 2003. I thought I had a cold, dead, Lake Michigan perch in my hand.
A dead fish handshake, eh?
