Bakery Brings in the Dough after Gay Threat (Heh! Bring on the Cookies! Gay Boycott Backfires)
Family Research Council ^ | October 2, 2010 | Jim Perkins

Posted on 10/02/2010 3:46:54 PM PDT by Mrs. Don-o

I've heard a lot of discrimination cases, but this one takes the cake! Last week in Indianapolis, a couple came under fire for turning away a special bakery order for "National Coming Out Day" at Indiana University (IU). The Just Cookies owners, David and Lily Stockton, politely explained to the caller that they didn't feel comfortable making rainbow-colored treats for a group that endorses homosexuality. As a father, David said he wanted to set the right example for his two daughters and stand by his moral beliefs.

Of course, as his wife explained, anyone is welcome to come to the store and buy cookies from their shelves. "I don't ask people about their sexual orientation," she told the Indianapolis Star after the caller, Heather Brown, started a campaign to get Just Cookies evicted from the City Market.

Brown, who, perhaps not so ironically, works as the "social justice coordinator" at IU, complained that it was "intolerant" to turn down her request. With the help of some ultra-liberal groups, she triggered an investigation by Mayor Greg Ballard's Office of Equal Opportunity. "This could be grounds for taking away their stand in the market," said the president of the City Market Board. "...[W]e can't tolerate discrimination like that," he insisted.

Since when did it become discrimination to have personal convictions? As business owners, it's completely within the Stocktons' right not to be forced by a customer to make a product that violates their moral and/or religious convictions. If the customers don't like it, they can take their dollars elsewhere. Just because David and Lily own a store doesn't mean they're slaves to the agenda of anyone who visits. The Stocktons are well within their legal bounds to decline an order that would make them a public part of a very perverse celebration.

One of the few locals who spoke out against the family said that taking this kind of stand is not "smart business." On the contrary, business has never been better! According to our friends at the Indiana Family Institute, local support has been so overwhelming that the Stocktons sold out of cookies! At least two conservative legal groups have already offered to defend the freedom of Just Cookies in court. That should teach liberals to pursue these half-baked ideas about "tolerance."

Now it's up to the Mayor to quit wilting under pressure and call off the investigation. Contact Mayor Greg Ballard's office (317-327-3601) and ask him to stop bullying businesses with conviction. If he can't stand the heat, tell him to get out of the Stocktons' kitchen!

Having been a previous customer (fortunately the clerk didn’t inquire about my sexual orientation at the time) I can say that my experience with their product was on par with the treatment of an entire segment of society - POOR. The cookies were tasteless, much like their actions when they denied a college institution with cookies for a GLBT event. Last time I checked, my money is as green as the heterosexual community, and the “immoral” gays generally have more disposable income than the straights - FACT. Pity on them.

Whatever the issues, this place sells bad products that don’t taste good. There are plenty of places within walking distance that offer better products. Don’t waste your money on bad food and bad service.

The food there isn’t good at all. Bought some cookies for a party and had to throw over half of them out. No one would eat more than one. And on top of that now I find out there biggots. They worry about their daughters be around gay people. What could be worse than growing up around bigot parents. Really sad.

I used to frequent Just Cookies for a sweet after lunch. They were never more than mediocre - but were convenient. I am a straight female, and the wife was never nice to me either. However, now, even the convenience factor will never get me to buy there again. Discrimination in any form compromises the rights of all of us.

Ordered several dozen for a work potluck!! I was shocked when everyone was talking about ‘how could something so pretty sould taste so bad!!” Never again!! Why would they not put more time into the tast? The lady behind the counter got very frustrated when she had trouble understanding my order. I won’t be back. Oh and no one from work will be either.

BTW, Indiana University, including its Indianapolis branch (IUPUI - Indiana University, Purdue University, Indianapolis), has some of the most nonsensical PC rules you can imagine.

I had a friend who worked at IUPUI about ten years back. She was told that she could not have an office holiday party unless she sent invitations to every other department in the building. The reason being that it might make others feel left out and was not in the “spirit of inclusiveness” the university strove for.

It's possible to be on the right side of an issue with completely asinine arguments, and these few are making me want to vomit:

- there are other bakeries in town that will make the sodomites' muffins, they should go there.

This is beside the point. What if, by some strange coincidence, Just Cookies was the only bakery in town? Would that change the situation?

It needs to be forcefully stated that not under any circumstance should the Stockton's be forced to compromise their moral values - even if they were the only bakery in the entire state.

- they should have been told that it would be three weeks to complete the order and at an exorbitant cost.

No, we should never lie to cover for our moral convictions. Ever.

- The owners should make them taste terrible, overbake them, anything to ensure a flop at the "Gay" event.

No. Again, this would be covering for their moral convictions, as well as being conniving, which is a leftist characteristic. The Stocktons should do everything to their utmost, and only attempt to do that which doesn't support perversion.

What's old adage? "Anything worth doing, is worth doing well." This has never been so apt as here.

Oh the rampant hypocrisy. It is so blatant, so obvious, the libs don't even see it.

The libs are preaching tolerance - yet being intolerant of the store owners because of their beliefs! What's the lib message: Be "tolerant" or we'll put you out of business? I guess the libs could do with a little practicing what they preach. They're tolerant of any perversion, but can't seem to tolerate people with convictions.

We're supposed to get along with everyone, yet they see it as their mission to not only to not get along with the store owners, but to lash back and vengefully try to hurt them? What utter hypocrisy.

The store owners don't agree with the group's agenda. So they declined to work with them. But the store owners didn't lash out and try to disband the group. Seems to me the store owners were showing a lot of grace, class, and yes, even tolerance of the group.

My daughter is in a required Womans Study course and the class is arguing back at the old leftist teaching it. Men and women.

I think that it is not particularly cool to be under age 25 and be leftist except when you live in a leftist cidadel.

Perhaps it is time for Heather Brown, the little dictator wannabe to be evicted from her state paid job for her lack of appreciation for the freedom of Americans. A barrage of phone calls to IU, the state legislature, and the governor might be in order. In these difficult financial times, can the state of Indiana afford to pay the salary of a social justice coordinator?

I’ve had that exact same thought. And not sometimes. Thats what is happening.
God is pure goodness and hates lukewarm.
Most of this country has been spiritually asleep or Dead for a long, long time.
We’ve pushed him out of our hearts and lives.
so he gives us what we want and withdraws and waits for us to see our mistakes.
that lasts for a few generations biblically. Then people forget and need it done all over again.
As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.Sounds like this fellow may feel the same. Good for him.

I hope people stand up if the City Market refuses to release or kicks them out. Leftists tend to work by hurting people they want to fight economically. Go after their jobs or their business.

You obviously don't know the new meaning of "tolerance" or of any of the other brave-new-world terms, do you. "Tolerance" doesn't mean anything like what it used to mean to normal people. The same with "diversity," "morality," or "fairness."

"Tolerance" now means: tow the liberal line or we'll destroy you. That's it.

I think I may call and ask them to deliver $20 worth of cookies to the nearest military recruiting stations.
I think both the Stocktons and the recruiters/recruits would enjoy it.
