It doesn't take much to whip up a protest in San Francisco - two people and a bad idea will do - but Gandhi? Really?
A group billing itself as the Organization for Minorities of India plans to protest today to demand the removal of the bronze statue of Mohandas Gandhi that has sat in the plaza behind the Ferry Building since 1988.

I don’t know if I would call him racist but certainly not worthy of his legend.
The Muslims don’t like Ghandi. That’s what this is really all about. They are a minority in India (by design) but they want to take it over and make it part of Pakistan.
So once again Islam rears its filthy head.
gandhi was openly rooting for Hitler in ww2. He was racist.
Haven’t these protesters learned anything from the left? Only white people are capable of racism.
Yep, I thought Gandhi was a liberal icon. Surprising to see groups protest about his statue.
That said, I honestly don’t know much about Indian history and whether Gandhi was bigoted. I know that India has numerous minority groups. While Gandhi preached his non-violence, did he harbor resentment of those other minorities?
Good question. I don't know either.
You are probably correct, they are likely just Muslims
“gandhi was openly rooting for Hitler in ww2. He was racist.”
interesting info.
got links?
(arguing with lib ammo)
Ghandi advised the Jews to submit to the NAZIs.
A while back someone showed me a link that showed that Ghandi’s tolerance of muslims grew out of a severe beating at their hands and the threat of death.
That isn’t pacifism, its fear.
Was he rooting for the National Socialism or the killing of Jews? I would guess he was a major Utopian and found Hitler’s aggression against Britian sweet revenge.
First they ignore you
Then they mock you
Then they fight you
Then you win
We're at step 3
nobody really knows what gandhi really thought about jews, but his open support for Hitler should disqualify him for statues.
Gandhi had many faults, chief among them a sort of fanatical naivete, the source of his unshakable belief in non-violence. He was lucky that his British opponents were just the sort of tolerant and indulgent people on which his propaganda could work.
That said, he was in fact quite the opposite of a caste-bigot. He was happy to cross caste and religious lines, sometimes quite scandalously by conservative Hindu standards. He was in fact assassinated by a Hindu supremacist.
No, he was just an extremist on the policy of “turn the other cheek”.
answer my own question;

I haven’t fully vetted it yet but it looks like a lot of “ammo” ;-)
buwaya is right in what he said.
Gandhi always fought the bigotry of caste in India, too. If he was just a “regular person” instead of the “Mahatma” he would have been thrown out of his caste for his behavior. When he traveled he would often try to stay at the homes of Untouchables, he cleaned his own toilet, etc. and those acts alone without following up with the intensive “cleansing” rituals proscribed by Hinduism broke his “caste”.
Group says Gandhi racist, plans to protest statue
Just sayin'...
