Bill McCollum comes to Alex Sink's defense
THE NEWS SERVICE OF FLORIDA ^ | September 29, 2010 | MICHAEL PELTIER

TALLAHASSEE - Alex Sink's attempt to rebut campaign allegations by Republican gubernatorial opponent Rick Scott that she fiddled while Florida's investment portfolio burned was bolstered by an unlikely ally Tuesday: Florida Attorney General and former Scott foe Bill McCollum. Days after Scott unleashed allegations that Sink was at fault for an investment freefall, Scott's former Republican rival McCollum appeared to go out of his way Tuesday to steer the state's top investment official to provide cover for the State Board of Administration's investment oversight during the tumultuous years following the 2007 market crash. In a series of questions, McCollum led SBA executive director Ash Williams down a path of questioning that sought to refute recent newspaper reports and a $1 million Scott ad campaign that paper losses in the state's retirement and local investment funds were preventable and resulted in actual losses to retirees and local governments.

Once again a bitter establishment guy is undercutting the party. I supported McCollum and have my misgivings about Scott, but he is running a very skilled campaign and selected a fantastic running mate. McCollum needs to just go away at this point.

McCollum, along with Sink and Crist, presided over the state’s pension fund at a time when it lost 33% of all of its assets . . . despite 19 internal audits telling them to do something before it happened.

They lost $250 million in their failed Stuyvesant Town/Peter Cooper Village (NYC) real estate venture.

Agreed....
This is one career politician/gov’t employee defending another career gov’t employee. Ms. Sink’s campaign ads are pathetic. Who’s running the Dept. of Financial Services while she’s running for office?
She is going to find out that being an entrenched Tallahassee gov’t employee does not guarantee automatic ascension to higher office.

McCollum has had a good run with taxpayer provided salaries, health ins.,pension(s), travel expenses - you name it. He has become representative of bloated and overbearing government.
Time to go do something else Bill (and Alex) - I voted against you in the primary.

Me too. I know McCollum personally and am annoyed by his conduct after losing the primary. McCollum has not had the self-discipline and loyalty to take the loss gracefully and accept the judgment of the party’s voters.

I’m sorry, but I cannot agree with you. Scott is a crook, defrauding the state of several millions. He’s trying to make someone else look like one? What a jerk. If McCollum is setting the record staright and it is the truth, better for us to know that than to let Scott get his hands on some power. If we think Obama is bad for the economy, just wait. Scott will take FL down the tubes.

Scott is NO conservative. Scott is not an honest, nice guy. Don’t be fooled.

No, I’m not a lurker, either. I’ve been with FreeRepublic for several years and support it. Those of you who support Scott were conned.

Bill McCollum may be an insider in your mind, but that doesn’t disqualify him for being a good and honorable man, qualified to hold office. We do want to re-elect good people and not throw the good out with the bad. That is nonsense and can have pretty bad consequences. We do need some people with experince. We don’t need more people like what we now have in the WH.

I don't live in Florida but, from the outside, I have long been convinced that McCollum is essentially a nerdy and very establishmentarian technocrat who has zero charisma, not much to offer in the way of public policy and yet feels entitled to be nominated by the GOP. His repeated losses whenever opposed by capable candidates in primaries or elections seem not to dissuade his delusions of personal competence. McCollum is a distraction in the body politic and this is not the first time that his self worship has gotten in the way of Florida's best interests.

McCollum has lost the primary and he should tuck his tail between his legs and depart public life stage left. Time for Florida and its GOP to move on.

You may well wonder why outsiders care and the answer is that living in the USA means not wanting to have a Demonrat like Sink have ANY say so in the redistricting of Florida's Congressional Districts. Your and McCollum's claim that Scott is a crook who defrauded the state of Florida of millions has already been heard and rejected by the Florida GOP voters in the primary. Grownups accept the consequences and move on. How much do you imagine that allowing the Demonrats a say in Florida's redistricting will cost taxpayers in Florida and nationally? After all that we, as a nation, have suffered under the current tyranny in Washington, you have nothing more important to worry over than the Florida GOP's ongoing rejection of the claims of Mr. Excitement???

Being an insider is more often than not a disqualification. Whatever Scott may be, he is certainly not comparable to those occupying positions of power under Comrade Obamao.

Is McCollum a good man? An honorable man? Probably. So what? Most men in Florida probably are good and honorable men. Is he qualified to hold office? That is a different question. Most Florida Republicans don't seem to think that he is most qualified and, perhaps, not qualified at all. A stuffy personality and an entitlement complex do not make McCollum qualified in and of themselves. Neither is he qualified by being a non-challenging comfortable old slipper.

Politics should be more about principles and policies and less about jobs and contracts. And less about whether "our" old crowd of compromisers and political trimmers can hold on for four more years of economic goodies at the public's expense. McCollum seems to have forgotten that if he ever understood it at all. Politics is war by other means and McCollum is giving aid and comfort to the Demonrat enemy. He needs to evaporate permanently. He has gone from a loser to an irrelevancy.

The only serious question today is who will sign a conservative congressional and legislative redistricting plan next year. The answer is Scott. At this point nothing else matters.

McCullum must see a pro democrat redistricting as his only way back into a job.

Almost exactly spot-on. Well analyzed.

Thank you for pointing that out. McCollum wouldn't go after Sink during the primaries because he thought it would look "political". Now, we know the real reason.

I supported McCollum but forgive me my sins!
