Local law enforcement and federal agents conducted a checkpoint operation Tuesday afternoon in Douglas County, the Federal Air Marshal Service told the AJC.
"This is a live operation intent on deterring would-be terrorists or criminal activity," Nelson Minerly, spokesman for the federal agency, told the AJC.
The operation created a big distraction to motorists heading eastbound on I-20 in rush hour, and many motorists let the AJC and the WSB traffic center hear about it.
But the operation, which also involves the Transportation Security Administration, is top-secret before it happens, Minerly said.
“We don’t advertise when they’re going to happen or when they’re going to be," Minerly said.
Mostly trucks were being checked, Minerly said. Shortly before 6 p.m., nothing had been recovered in the operation, he said.
"There's no specific threat," Jon Allen, regional spokesman for the TSA, told the AJC.
It might be related to the spate of shootings and other threats going on right now.
The way this administration is going,it wouldn’t be beyond the norm to have someone finally go McVeigh.It is not Waco redux but it is getting kind of close.
But it is good that they are doing something with their resources that could give pause to someone out to do harm to American civilians.
Either that or a dosimeter/geiger counter got set off on the highway :(

These are FEDERAL checkpoints... roadblocks... this is eerie indeed. One step from troops on the ground.
Unfortunately many Americans probably would go along with martial law without asking many questions. "It can't happen here."

Sorry. This is taking place outside of Atlanta, GA. All 18 wheeler trucks are being pulled over and inspected.

Homeland Security Exercise On I-20 and Thornton Road

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ga. — The Department Of Homeland Security is conducting a federal exercise on I-20 and Thornton Road.
The checks only apply for trucks that are passing through the weigh station.
The security checkpoint will continue in to the evening hours.
“Is this Douglas County, Colorado?”
At first, I thought it was Arizona. Then I thought it was rural Nevada. When I saw “ajc,” Atlanta Journal Contitution, I realized it was the Atlanta area.

I am sorry that you were inconvenienced by my not indicating what city or state this story took place in.
I thought that was what links were for. I had to step away from the computer for a while because my wife was undergoing her daily radiation treatment and I was posting from the doctor’s office and needed to take her home.
