Not content with offending Canadians, CEO Reed Hastings wasted no time insulting Americans. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Hastings was asked if he was worried that U.S. subscribers would be upset that the company was offering Canadians an unlimited movie streaming service for $7.99 per month, one dollar less than what Americans had to pay. Hastings replied:
How much has it been your experience that Americans follow what happens in the world? It's something we'll monitor, but Americans are somewhat self-absorbed.
Wow. Netflix basically told all Americans that were dumb and unobservant. Great public relations, Reed! Hastings issued yet another Netflix apology on its blog:
My Big American Foot is in my mouth. I do not believe that one of the most philanthropically-minded nations in the world (America) is self-absorbed or full of self-absorbed people. My apologies to anyone offended by my self-absorbed comment.

Americans who vote for liberals are stupid.
Now who’s the stupid one?????????
This country has cornered the market on stupidity, and that is all there is to it.
Apparently Reed Hastings bought a Clark bar in a vending machine for 25 cents back in 1977.
That’s the problem with using absolutes; your point rarely comes across as accurate because your group is too large.
Now if he had applied his comments to the 18-24 year old age group, I’d say his comments are pretty much dead on.
I wounder how many Americans know who he is or what he said.
Is he wrong?
Look who’s running our government. He may have a point.
Cue Jay Leno’s Street Walking
wHo sais’ aMerikenz is stoopId] i says theys isn/T..mouRon!
netflix ‘s stoopid 2#
A fool and his money are soon parted.
Look no further than the White Hut(House).
I read the article and he doesn’t say that Americans are “stupid.” He said “self-absorbed” and it sounded like he was joking. Canadians get a dollar off the monthly fee, but no discs in the mail, probably because they aren’t set up to start mailing stuff to another country yet. There’s no scandal here.
Maybe I am one of those dumb Americans, but isn’t the Canadian dollar “worth” more than the U.S. dollar?
So actually, it all works out the same,
7.99 US vs. 7.99 CAN.
Netflix has the monopoly for now.
We got so tired of receiving defective DVD’s from Netflix that we canceled after a few months. Invariably, we’d get near the end of the movie and the DVD would go haywire. Upon inspection, the DVDs looked like they had been wiped with steel wool. This happened on a fairly new DVD player.
Not going to renew anytime soon, so it’s TCM or AMC for movie watching for the near future.
We use the online service a lot.
