NEW YORK Conservative Party candidate Rick Lazio on Monday withdrew from the race for governor, a decision that helps the tea party candidate who beat Lazio in the Republican primary.
Lazio told The Associated Press that he wants to continue to influence the race and bring a workable job-creation program into a contest he says has devolved into name-calling between Republican Carl Paladino and Democrat Andrew Cuomo.

Looks like the Conservative Party will lose its ballot line, at least for the next 2 years.

RE: Helping GOP
How large is the Conservative party voting block?
When you add their numbers to the tea party, independent and GOP votes, will that even be enough to overcome the Democratic vote in a state where Donkeys outnumber Elephants 2-1 ?

Great news, and thank you, Rick Lazio!
FReepers have been bashing Lazio endlessly lately (yeah, I know he didn't run a great campaign vs Hillary in 2000), but I've met him several times and from what I can tell, he seems to be a decent guy.
Nice that he had enough class to bow out of this race completely.

Maybe not. Lazio is going to be nominated for a judgeship tonight. Link courtesy of FReeper Seattle Conservative:
Bronx County Republican Chairman Jay Savino confirms to me that Rick Lazio will be nominated for Supreme Court judge at the party's nominating convention tonight, judgeship being one of three ways (other than moving out of New York or dying) that Lazio can get off the ballot for governor.

Well - Lazio lost the primary to Paladino 62/38 - It’s a stretch to call him ‘the man’, IMO. He bowed out for “his own political career”.
