Irvine consultant Joe Vranich, who has been compiling a list of companies leaving California because of the state’s anti-business environment, is now up to 144 companies that have departed in 2010, including 34 in Orange County.
In addition, he lists 51 companies (8 from Orange County) that left in 2009. That three-fold increase, Vranich says, is the tip of the iceberg that is California’s financial woes.
“Quite clearly, the exodus of businesses out of California continues. It makes sense for companies to reduce their California footprint considering the ample supply of attractive, lower-cost alternative locations. Unless California reduces its hostility toward business, we will see more commercial enterprises seeking friendlier locations in which to relocate entirely or at least place facilities there that used to be located here.”
Among the Orange County companies new to his list are Boeing, Kennametal Inc., Latex International, Multi-Fineline Elextronix Inc., NGK Spark Plug Co., Pipeline Software Inc., Smith Micro Software Inc. and Witt Heat Transfer Products Group, most of which have been previously reported by the Register. Vranich says Orange County may be over-represented on his list because news reports are one source of his information and the Register reports business comings and goings more than some publications.
Vranich doesn’t include in his list every company that opens a facility elsewhere. Here’s how he explains:
“I’ve excluded countless companies that are attempting to serve new territories or new customers, are expanding because the company is growing, or are acquiring companies located elsewhere. When events appear unrelated to California’s hostile business environment, I give the companies the benefit of the doubt and leave them off the list.
Which locations are benefiting from California’s exodus? Vranich says in a Fox&Hounds article:

Well those states will soon be for sale along with Cakifornia on e-bay soon.
Actually, if Buffalo was smart...they’d hire three salesman (who are unemployed right now), and send them out for six months in California to talk up moving to Buffalo. If they just convince one company to move....they’ve made their cost, but I bet they can talk five to ten companies into moving.
I dont think life long Californians could survive in Buffalo even one winter
The NEW ballad of Jed Clampett
Come and listen to a story bout a man named Jed
Poor oil entrepreneur barely kept his family fed
Then one day he was working for some food,
And up through the crowd come a bumbling fool
(Arnold that is, RINO gold, more taxes please)
Well the first thing you know old Jeds taxes are to much to bear,
Kin folk said Jed move away from there!
Said California is no place for you to be
So they loaded up the truck and they moved from Beverly
(gon back to the Hills they are, fishn holes, country and western stars)
Well now its time to say goodbye to Jed and all his kin
They would like to thank you folks for kindly dropping in
Youre all invited back again to their new locality
To have a heaping helping of their hospitality
(Redneck Hillbillies, is what the press call em now,
Clingers of bibles and guns and to Obama no bow!
Nice folks Yall come back now, ya hear?)
Liberal run states are in the worst shape.
California.
Massachusetts.
Illinois.
Michigan.
New York.
Pennsylvania.
Incredible, meanwhile the pollsters&complicit media are trying to ‘push’ Brown and Boxer over the top,, again.
And the California liberals will feel right at home in NY.
My company has an opening out in CA near LA. It has been open for over 3 months - in this jobs climate. I co-worker asked me if I was interested (it is a plum assignment in my field). I replied immediately and truthfully that I would quit the Company before I would let them transfer me there at any salary they could reasonably offer.
Hell, even Washington and Oregon found them annoying, snooty, condescending, and way too damn liberal, until the transplants corrupted those states into their own image.
California metastasizes.
The article mentions Boeing. I can assume that they are talking about the plant in Long Beach. If I remember correctly that is the old Douglas aircraft plant from years ago.
You're kidding - right? CA & NY are the two most anti-business states in the union. Why anyone remains in either is a mystery to me.
Sounds like Whitman and Fiorina need to run a whole lot more ads especially in liberal dominated areas of the state like the Bay area, Los Angeles, Hollywood and Beverly Hills.
Liberal policies were responsible for closing McDonnell Douglas, then Hughes and now they are trying to do the same with Boeing.
Very glad to see the great state of Virginia on the list of those welcoming the firms. This is the upside of of CA`s policies. The good states benefit. Keep up the good work, CA!!
Thats for that concise explanation of the california multinational taxing scheme.
The Citizens of California deserve this for constantly voting overwhelmingly for decades for Democrat politicians who destroy the tax base with huge benefits for illegals and those who refuse to get a job.
Long Beach is in Los Angeles County. Boeing has a facility in Huntington Beach that is part of its Space Exploration group.
If I were a business owner looking to move from California, New York would be near the bottom of the list, right next to Massachusetts, Vermont, Maryland and Maine.
Not after Paladino gets elected
But you are right- I would wait until then
If Cuomo wins I WILL be moving out of the state (and I am NOT just joking about that)
