My company has an opening out in CA near LA. It has been open for over 3 months - in this jobs climate. I co-worker asked me if I was interested (it is a plum assignment in my field). I replied immediately and truthfully that I would quit the Company before I would let them transfer me there at any salary they could reasonably offer.

You should reconsider. Take the job and then file a workmen’s comp claim like everyone else does here in Calif.
