ObamaCare Flatlines: ObamaCare Taxes Home Sales - Clobbers Middle-Class Americans
GOP.Gov ^ | GOP.GOV

Posted on 09/25/2010 8:54:04 PM PDT by NavyCanDo

“I can make a firm pledge. Under my plan, no family making less than $250,000 a year will see any form of tax increase. Not your income tax, not your payroll tax, not your capital gains taxes, not any of your taxes,” President Obama, September 12, 2008

Beginning January 1, 2013, ObamaCare imposes a 3.8% Medicare tax on unearned income, including the sale of single family homes, townhouses, co-ops, condominiums, and even rental income.

In February 2010, 5.02 million homes were sold, according to the National Association of Realtors. On any given day, the sale of a house, townhome, condominium, co-op, or income from a rental property can push middle-income families over the $250,000 threshold and slam them with a new tax they can’t afford.

This new ObamaCare tax is the first time the government will apply a 3.8 percent tax on unearned income. This new tax on home sales and unearned income and other Medicare taxes raise taxes more than $210 billion to pay for ObamaCare. The National Association of Realtors called this new Medicare tax on unearned income “destructive” and “ill-advised” and warned it would hurt job creation.

All of this must be repealed. It must not stand.

That’s 3800 bucks on a 100,000 dollar house with absolutely no recourse. It will hurt sales, inflate prices, and deaden markets. Our government is full of idiots who can only think of getting more money. They’re in the process of killing the goose.

The Obamaton's are doing something sneaky that I see that is true Marxism, in Healthcare, The Fianancial Industry, this in Real-Estate, Insurance via Health Care....

They are destroying peoples "margins", i.e. margins of profit. Profit is a bad word, i.e. Michelle screeding to go work for no-profits.

You can't have a middle class when you are working for nothing in these careers that are time intensive and require relationships to get the sale.

Who will bear the burden of this? the Realtors, many will get out IMHO another group to go Galt....

All this will do it jack up home prices and make owning a home more out of reach for the middle class.

Owning a home? Thanks to Obama spending our children's future, the only people who will be able to own a home will be the nomenclatura in Washington DC.

Our children and grandchildren will be living in Soviet-style apartments.

Not quite. According to this article on Fact Check, A 3.8 Percent “Sales Tax” on Your Home? , I think this is how it works. If you are single, have an income of $200K, then you will be taxed 3.8% on any profit over $250K when you sell your home. For married couples that make $250K, they will be taxed 3.8% on any home sales profit over $500K. There is no exclusion, though if you sell a vacation home or rental property.

It still stinks.

I agree.

My brother was an independent mortgage broker who did 50 or so million dollars of gross business a year. Employed with benefits about a dozen people. But an “angry, anti-capitalist” government changed the rules that drove just about all independents out of business.

His answer. He sold that business and opened another tha had the least government interaction and controls he could find. Simple retail. He’s the only family supported by it, so they threw away a dozen jobs with benefits. He’s built it up to a fine living for his family, but if it keeps going he’s going to have to employ some folks. He doesn’t want to because it will get the government involved.

They’ve forced Galt to act on the value of personal independence.

this is bs. House sales gains at least up to 500k for mfj are not subject to any obamacare tax. No need to make up things.

What is mfj? Can you cite the part of the obamacare law that deals with this? Thanks!

““Ya gotta pass it to find out what’s in it!” - Nazi Polizei”

That line should be used extensively by Carly Fiorina in the Senate race

With 3 or 4 families to an appartment. But that is what the majority of people who voted, voted for. Well....not exactly, they foted for freebies, as long as someone else was having to pay they did not give a damn.

I would want to be able to say that they learned a lesson, but, if they were stupid enough to vote for obama and Democrats, they lack the ability to form independent thoughts. All their actions, such as voiding body wastes, eating , sleeping, are instinctive. They lack the intelligence to know to get in out of the rain.

I still hold that ObamaCare was designed as a Euthanasia program to kill off the Baby Boom in a half-baked attempt to save what is left of the Social Security System. The system cannot withstand the demographics. So... stay healthy or die...

The ones that wrote, voted for, and signed this bill into law knew full well that increasing costs would reduce costs. It was and is control over the peasantry that was one of their goals. That and elimenating a one growing segment of the population.[To Wit]The elderly ,infirm, and what their heroes reerred to as “useless eaters”.

No, you can call the authors of obama care a lot of things, but stuipd and idiots are not among them.

However, “stupid” and “idiots” are perfect adjectives for those who voted to elect the politicans that put obama care into effect.

hat's what it says on Snopes, but in this case, Snopes is wrong. It's mfj of 250K, not 500K, which you can read for yourself earlier in the same Snopes article. The mistake they made was applying the 250K to both husband and wife, which is not the way the law is worded.

I think you should cite the law in question, and explain your interpretation.

I did a quick search for "capital gains exclusion primary residence", and everyone of them says that it is $500,000 for a married couple filing jointly.
