Colbert's Corny Report: Democrats invite satirist to make a farce of the lawmaking process
The Washington Times ^ | September 24, 2010 | Editorial

Comedian Stephen Colbert's appearance before a House panel on farm jobs and illegal immigrants made a mockery of one of the most contentious issues of the election season. In playing host to this display, Democrats proved their self-destructive instincts are alive and well....

The type of mockery that plays on cable television doesn't translate well to the halls of Congress, especially when that body is held in such low public esteem and its gravitas is greatly in question. This was not the time for Democrats to make a farce of the process of lawmaking. For his part, Mr. Colbert was at a loss to make every response into a punch line. His ad-libbed comment about "gay Iowans" being "corn packers" amused neither homosexuals nor Iowans, and from the expression on his face it seemed Mr. Colbert knew the joke had fallen flat....

Mr. Colbert is mocking the 42 percent of Americans who self-identify as conservatives. He will continue this inexplicable form of political activism with his "March to Keep Fear Alive" rally in Washington on Oct. 30. If Mr. Colbert wants to keep conservative voters energized, he's doing a good job of it. In November, voters will have the last laugh.

It was a distraction to the Joseph Coates hearing.

New RNC TV ad...Two wars, high unemployment, out of control illegal immigration...and who does Nancy Pelosi’s congress seek advice from? Then cue to a clip of him trying to enter pictures of his colon into the record.

I believe that I will contact Lofgren’s office on Monday and give them a polite (but firm) piece of my mind.

I hope you do. She sure needs an extra one or two. I'd have given her some of mine, had I any to spare.

“incredibly impressive”?? Puh-leeze!

You're right - my use of "impressive" isn't accurate in the literal sense. So allow me to restate as I intended it to come across:

Incredibly effective.

In the sense that the Coates hearing was barely even covered on FoxNews, being completely overshadowed by the Colbert testimony.

Being stoned is probably what makes Colbert’s (and Stuart”s) audience think they’re funny. When I was in college in the 70’s I thought Sat Nite Live was funny. When I saw the reruns years later, I thought they were stupid.
