Mouse-eating opossums run amok in Brooklyn (gov't solves a problem)
New York Post ^ | 9-19-10 | HEATHER HADDON

In a bizarre attempt to outwit Mother Nature, city officials introduced beady-eyed opossums in Brooklyn years ago to scarf down rats running amok in the borough, according to local officials.

Surprise: Operation opossum didn't work.

Not only do wily rats continue to thrive, but the opossums have become their own epidemic, with bands of the conniving creatures sauntering through yards, plundering garbage cans and noshing on fruit trees.

“The critters have a mouth full of 50 sharp teeth, tend to exude a foul odor, and can occasionally contract rabies,’

In other words, liberals.

Possums are marsupials. Foul, destructive, flea and stench ridden marsupials.

This sort of thing is happening all over - introduce a new animal/insect/organism to control another. The outcome is always the same. Instead of fixing the first problem, they create another. It's not nice to fool Mother Nature!

The comments at the site are funny. Urging that the opossums be let loose at city council meetings. Lot’s o rats there!

What a bunch of urban idiots. Out here we call possums “natures garbage cleaners.” Then the dogs kill them.

What they need is some 10 year olds with single-shot .22s, CB caps, and a $.025 bounty on rats. Say 100 kids. Problem solved.

Possums are great in the wild, at a distance of about 50 feet, they are kind of fun to watch. Any closer, and it feels like a hobo’s dirty laundry was suddenly thrust up one’s nose. At about 20 feet, you can see the bugs crawling through and over their coats. At 10 feet, you can see the ingrained dirt in their digging claws and snouts.

Besides being gross, they are incredibly destructive in urban or suburban settings. They like to get into the attic and root around the insulation and wiring. The stench they leave, especially from a boar, is almost impossible to expunge without a tearout and renovation.

Feral cats would have been a better solution - NOT A GOOD ONE - but better.

*shudder*

========================================= Isn't that the truth!!! Anyone with 20 seconds worth of experience with a possum would know that this was a bad idea. The next bright idea they will have is introducing Kudzu to central park to cover up bare spots in the woods.

Only in NY would possums "nosh."

The CMP can provide inner city rug-rats with good .22 single shots for a very reasonable price, if they join a CMP affiliate club, and beat some sense into their governments.

It's a win-win. We get a new crop of marksmen, the locality gets rid of rats, and the nation grows stronger by training for more self sufficient and competent children.

That’s where they came from? I really noticed them last summer. Quite a few of them play possum so well, they got run over.

“Are you sure it’s not liberals you’ve been watching?”

I am quite certain. Possums are smarter, and they don’t kill their own young.

LOL, Where I grew up there was an eccentric older woman who would occasionally freak out over the “giant rats” that came out of the storm drains late at night. She had a reputation for drinking. She also had a walnut tree in her front yard. Seemed every possum for miles knew how to find her house through the storm drains when the walnuts were falling.
