Mexico gets VW engine factory (instead of TN)

Volkswagen plans to pick Mexico as the site for an engine plant to serve its assembly plant in that country and the automaker’s Chattanooga factory, according to a report.

Automotive News reported Tuesday an announcement could come as soon as today.

Last month, Frank Fischer, chief executive of VW's operations in Chattanooga, told the Times Free Press he didn't expect the engine plant to come to the city.

“We said, ‘Please do it,’” Fischer said in August. “We were supporting it.” But VW officials were looking at manufacturing capacity and consumer demand in locating the plant, he said.

Mexico had been named by VW’s top brass as a potential site for the engine plant. VW’s plant in Puebla, Mexico, has an annual capacity of 525,000 vehicles. Chattanooga’s is to produce 150,000 cars a year.

J.Ed. Marston, the Chattanooga Area Chamber of Commerce’s vice president of marketing, said earlier that local officials wouldn’t be surprised if the city did not land the VW engine plant.

But he said a successful launch of the Chattanooga plant early next year could provide chances for the facility to grow.

If this is the case then perhaps TN should go after VW for all of this corporate welfare.

I doubt it. Why invest the money building the infrastructure? As things stand now, this is a 'Corker Monument to Ineptness' which is exactly what he doesn't want.

German execs sure won’t be able to visit their plant in Mexico, unless they bring along some ransom money.

Why would transnational corporations want to use the US labor force?

China, Mexico, etc. cheap labor, low environmental regulations, easier political kickbacks, nonunion, etc.

Maybe it is that big mosque being built in TN. MN has all those muslims at one plant. I would not build a factory in MN with those people as employees. They might blow up the factory.

VW’s been building cars in Mexico since 1965.
They were building the Beetle there until 2004.

Smart business move for VW. Bad business climate in the U.S.....no business incentives to stay here. The current political stench must be completely changed first.

The Germans may be thinking TN is turning muslim. I mean the stipud idiots who watch TV elected one to run the country.

If I were a German exec - I would NOT build a factory in the USA. No way. Elections have consequences and mega mosques do too. 110,000 idiots show up for a UT game or any college game. I guess protesting Islmaification was too much trouble. The public is more interested in nonsense like ball games than keeping their liberty.

Yep and the local politico's swallowed "Builder Bob's" crap hook, line and sinker. They've been absolutely giddy about it ever since the plant was announced. Tens of millions of tax dollars spent to court a company with a history of abandoning US operations. All for a couple thousand jobs that, in all likelihood, probably won't last 10 years. Ask the folks in PA what they like best about VW who chose to close the plant in PA, rather than retool to make cars people wanted that were selling. Yeah, that makes sense.....
