"As the popularity of motorcycles increases, loud pipes become offensive to the general public out there," Scott added.
The roaring motorcycles -- primarily Harleys -- have led to a bill that would target motorcyclists who remove factory-installed emission control devices mandated by the federal government and replace them with custom, aftermarket parts that often make their bikes louder and more polluting.
SB 435 had been approved by the state legislature and now is sitting on the Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's desk. The Harley-riding governor has until Sept. 30 to sign the bill into law or veto it.
If the governor puts his stamp of approval on the measure, motorcyclists would be required to post a visible, unaltered Environment Protection Agency stamp to confirm the exhaust system is clean burning and does not exceed 80 decibels -- about the same noise level as a vacuum cleaner. The stamp would only be required for motorcycles and aftermarket parts made after 2013.
"The noise caused by illegally modified motorcycle exhaust systems is a major quality of life issue across the state," said state Sen. Fran Pavley, a Democrat from Agoura Hills. "Basic common sense and decency dictates that when a motorcycle drives by and sets off every car alarm on the street, that is too loud
First-time offenders would be fined up to $100; tickets could be voided if the owners bring their bikes back into compliance. Subsequent infractions would be subject to fines of $100 to $250.

I took your threat at face value and responded appropriately, I thought. It might be a good idea for you to stop acting like a fool and realize that words mean things.
If you are posting sarcasm, label it as such. Otherwise it will be taken as your position on the subject and you could be the victim of unintended consequences. Kind of like grabbing hold of a police officer.
this is not about loud pipes,
this is about another tax.
it will be challenged and then modified to apply to ALL vehicles on the road. Meaning all muffler repairs will have the same tax added on.
“If you are posting sarcasm, label it as such.”
No.
folks all these arguments are non-sequiters.
this is about MONEY
california needs money DESPERATLY
the average harley rider (and most likely other brands too) has more incomed and educated for more income and is a source of income.
So all the ballerina’s whining about noise and those who ride should just focus on showing the LAW is silly since the law is already on the books.
(not to mention federally preempted)
It is a scooter and doesn’t do what my Virago did 30 years ago but it will do the speed limit comfortably anywhere in the state and gets 80 mpg +or- a couple. My very first machine way back in 63 was a Vespa. In 3 decades I was all up and down the size spectrum and all different types. I rode rats. I got what was cheap and would get me up the road. I rode a CA250 Honda coast to coast and half-way back and a Victor from Texas to Spokane to Florida as well as the Al-Can ride on the CB750. I left another Victor in the water in the Everglades when it seized up and then I put my thumb out to get on up the road.
Exactly, muffle all of that and throw water on the barking dog.
I took the baffles out of a Honda.
Now, I believe you had something to say to me?
I do NOT wear skin-tight jeans, little scarves or sport a teeny-bopper hair style. I don’t sip latte, not wear Birkenstocks. I am a veteran, reasonably well-educated and a daily walker. While walking, I listen to books-on-tapes. I am regularly passed by roaring cycles and I have to stop the CD and then go back, once the cycles are out of earshot, and try and find my place. Bikers have rights, but so do I. (BTW, we share the same first name.)
Does my loud bike interfere with your most important phone call? 8-)

You’re issuing a death threat to RFEngineer?
Really? On an open forum? Twice?
The problem with annoying those folks, is you annoy the very folks who certainly would love to leave you alone with respect to your bike along with them.
Your view isn't a conservative view, it's a libertine view (I'm doing what I want, screw everyone else). The problem with that view is, since you won't take responsibility for yourself (a conservative viewpoint), others are now attempting to do so for you (a liberal viewpoint). Loud pipes may save lives (show me a real, unbiased study that has been published), but vigilance on the road will serve you better. There is a place for open exhausts, at the track, or in the desert.
On my street alone, there are three Harley riders. Two of the three have stock pipes, ride into the neighborhood at normal speeds and have done so for years. The third is an open-piper who cranks the throttle without regard for anyone around him, nor with a care about what time of day, or night, it is. He also whips down the road in a residential area full of kids at twice the speed limit.
But when I go to talk to him about the speeding alone, I'm the one being an "asshole."
Maybe folks don’t like to be jerked out of a deep sleep by some moron roaring past his house in the middle of the night. I promise not to let my dogs yap at the moon all night if you promise to quiet your bike down.
Same as I laugh at "men" who derive their manhood from a vehicle.
LOL! I can’t believe it took 83 posts to get the SP view on this topic.
FAGS indeed!
I believe he was the one who threatened my life, twice, on an open forum. It wasn’t labeled as sarcasm, as a matter of fact, when I mentioned the importance of labeling such, he responded, “No”.
I responded to someone who issued a threat to, at the very least, my personal safety raising the possibility of permanent injury or paralysis, at the worst, the loss of my life. The threat was issued in such a way as to make it seem as any injury to me would be justified given my appearance and the fact that I was using a method of conveyance that this person finds offensive.
If I did in fact die from injuries that this poster was, in theory, responsible for, he would likely fair much better financially from the lawsuit by my heirs than he would taking care of my every need for every day of the rest of my life. Of course, the way I believe the assclown operates, he would just declare himself insolvent and bypass any responsibility.
It wouldn’t be my fault if he shot himself in the back of the head after suffering so much remorse, lol.
Posts about loud bikes has the same effect on Free Republic as Sarah Palin has on the Republican establishment. It really smokes out the cry babies.
LOL!
Your posts have been reported as abuse.
Who is this “almaking” lady and what did you do to pi$$ her off so much? LOL!
