DeMint Promotes Redistributing Power to States (DeMint would dismantle many federal departments)
Roll Call ^ | 2010-09-19 | Melanie Starkey

Posted on 09/19/2010 4:41:32 PM PDT by rabscuttle385

Sen. Jim DeMint argued for a “devolution of power out of Washington,” saying Sunday that “the fact is, education probably would work a lot better without the Department of Education.”

The South Carolina Republican had been asked on CNN’s “State of the Union” whether candidates whom he and the tea party movement have endorsed are too far out of the political mainstream. When host Candy Crowley gave Sharron Angle’s call to abolish the Education Department as an example, DeMint said, “She’s very bold to say it.” Angle is the GOP candidate challenging Majority Leader Harry Reid (D) for his Senate seat in Nevada.

I would support a devolution of power out of Washington for education, health care, transportation, and I’ve introduced a lot of legislation for that, too,” DeMint added, saying the power should go to the states. “And you can do it in a common-sense, reasonable way that doesn’t disrupt any of the activities that we support.”

The notion of crown lands or government land is so pervasive in law that it was not considered worthy of separate mention.

I'm not sure that holds in the US. When they bought the Louisiana Purchase, for example, and as the borders spread west, it never occurred to them to limit where settlers could settle (aside from Indian treaty lands). They eventually began to police it somewhat, but the idea that government should own the land forever came, when, in Teddy Roosevelt's era?

I believe that is when government ownership of the land solidified and the land was withdrawn from settlement.

I don't oppose federal ownership of real estate for specific purposes but holding large chunks of land in perpetuity is not proper.

Townships used to have “commons” - used for pasture, wood, etc.

Local government owned land, where the people who live there can decide what kind of common use they want for it.

Demint is someone whose time has arrived. What a breathe of fresh air. He says it like it is. You can bet the only negative will come from Massa O’s slave group, the entitlement group who are seeing the goring of their oxen. They will have to find another method of employment other than reproducing and collecting slave wages, ie welfare, ad infinitum. I see nothing wrong with local assistance to folks in a jam but I object to their making it an avocation. Each state can make a decision as to whether accept this giveaway or assist those who help themselves.
GOD BLESS AMERICA.

>>>>I’m curious. Why keep Agriculture, the Interior, Commerce, and HHS? They’re no better than the ones you’re abolishing.<<<<<<<

I would keep them in a severely scaled back form. Ag includes the USDA,which insures food safety.... Interior includes the Natl Parks......Commerce the census..........HHS includes Social Security/Medicare which are untouchable.

Post Roads are permitted but not required as an enumerated power. Why keep the DOT. It’s primary role is to turn congressmen into prostitutes.

The swing/moderate congressmen know that the big entitlements are a bad idea and would vote against them ... except they get their own Luisianna Purchase.

Instruct all collectors of transportation taxes (oil companies, airports, etc) to pay those taxes directly to the state in which collected. Sunset all Federal transportation taxes in 5 years. Theat gives states the ability to pass replacement taxes (or not) and keep the money.

Winners:
Big Airports (Chicago, Atlanta, NY, NJ, etc).
State governors, legislators, lobbyists.
Taxpayers
Airplane passengers
Highway users
Small construction companies into maintenance.
Mass transit advocates in states where it is popular.
Blue states who are always shortchanged and pay more in than they get back.
Red states that chafe at the strings attached.

Losers:
Beltway lobbyists, moderate congressmen.
North American Highway and other expensive, grandiose plans.
The Mexican owned cement company that has the biggest share of cement in the USA and worldwide.
Other big global construction companies.
Mass transit fans in states where they are not popular.

DeMint sponsored a bill allowing the FAA to change the law regarding how Cockpit Voice Recorder data is handled. He wants the airlines to have access to the data for “disciplinary” and “investigative” reasons. Something that is currently verboten. It is a nonsensical bill, and a monumentally foolish idea. Yet he persists. And this is something I wont overlook because he a “Real Conservative”.

The GOP is already the third party. The TEA party has already assumed control. They are pushing the agenda. They are winning contests.

I once ranched in eastern Oregon (70-74) where the only two industries were ranching and logging. The 5 mills are down to 0.5, and ranching is about half. So, I know exactly what you are talking about.

The other thing that needs to happen is 90% of the federal lands should be sold to US citizens. Tell me why the govt should own half or more of the land in some states?

Actually with the founding fathers. Article IV sec 3: "The Congress shall have Power to dispose of and make all needful Rules and Regulations respecting the Territory or other Property belonging to the United States "
