What on Earth Happened to the New York GOP?

A dozen years ago Republicans dominated state politics. It doesn't appear they'll be a factor this fall.

New York

Almost every state in the nation features a competitive race for governor or the Senate this fall. But not New York. Though Republicans are running for governor and both U.S. Senate seats—one to fill Hillary Clinton's unexpired term—polls show none have much of a chance of winning.

A dozen years ago, Republicans held a majority of New York's statewide elected offices and controlled the state Senate. Now they are a hapless minority. What happened?

"Republicans began a decline in the 1960s when Nelson Rockefeller made the party his personal creature," says New York GOP Chairman Ed Cox. Since then, the party structure has continued to be treated as the personal property of one man—first Sen. Al D'Amato and then Gov. George Pataki. Principles were abandoned in favor of cutting deals to buy short-term political support.

A key low point came in 2002 when Gov. Pataki made expensive concessions to public employee unions in exchange for their backing. The Conservative Party, energized in 1965 by William F. Buckley Jr.'s race for mayor of New York and the Senate victory of his brother James in 1970, became increasingly less able to prevent Republicans from drifting left on spending and debt.

"Republicans morphed with Democrats into one party called the Demopublicans," says Rob Astorino, who last November defeated an incumbent Democrat with 58% of the vote to become county executive in tony Westchester County, which includes Scarsdale and White Plains. "Voters couldn't detect much difference and didn't see most Republicans as a vehicle for reform and change."

“Republicans morphed with Democrats into one party called the Demopublicans,”

Not just in New York the same thing has or is happening everywhere and that’s why we have the ‘Tea Party’!

It’s about power and control. Principles are nowhere to be seen. Here’s hoping that we change that.

You can remove the democrat from the party BUT removing the democrat from the democrat is almost impossible.. they just become RINOs...

Educated cretins.. that love taxes.. hate personal responsibility.. Sophomores that think they are smart... cutting up the economic pie instead of learning to MAKE/create PIES... Capitalism creates wealth, socialism uses wealth up.. democrats are socialists..

I hope they really learn to hate Tea Party folks. That will mean we won. :-)

I don’t think I’ve ever read a piece of media crap where they EVER say a liberal will lose. It’s ONLY the (R) that will lose ‘in their mind’. Propaganda!

GO PALADINO!

What happened?

Um...immigration?

Even a dope like Dinkins can see that the Third Worlders who are flooding into NY are natural Dims: always looking for a handout, always blaming Whitey.

And who cheerleads for mass third world immigration?

The Wall Street Journal, of course.

The problem is in the mirror.

Thanks to the likes of D’Amato & Pataki the GOP in NY has been high-jacked and is currently in a state of shambles. Folks can't even turn to the conservative party as they have capitulated due to all their deal making thanks to unscrupulous leadership.

What on Earth Happened to the New York GOP?

I can tell you what happened: Good conservatives like me fled the state in ABJECT HORROR, leaving New York to Liberals (aka Democrats) and RINOs.

So now Ed Cox is trying to make the NYGOP his personal plaything.

Sounds like progress?

DeMint Warns of Possible Death for GOP
Sunday, September 19, 2010 10:21 AM

One of the GOP’s most conservative senators and a tea party favorite, Jim DeMint of South Carolina, says the Republican Party will be “dead” if it fails to live up to its principles again.

The same thing happened in Illinois: becoming Democrat Light RINOs destroyed the Republican Party. The last in a line of RINO governors pardoned all the murders on death row while he himself was on the way to federal prison for corruption.

In the election which followed, the voters wiped out the Republican Party. The Democrats got control of every state office, including both houses of the legislature. The Illinois Republican Party has been a dead, smouldering hulk ever since.

What on Earth Happened to the New York GOP?

1) Unions
2) White Flight
3) Huge influx of illegal immigrants
4) Net loss of middle income jobs
5) Large population of ‘alternative lifestyle’

All that is left is fits the Democrat Party victim ideology demographic.
