Police Call Gang-Rape Photo Sharing 'Disgusting'

Police say photos of a 16-year-old girl being gang-raped at a rave in suburban Vancouver are being posted on Facebook and passed around in e-mails and text messages that one detective called "disgusting."

The teenager, who cannot be identified under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, was attending a rave along with several hundred other youths in the Vancouver suburb of Pitt Meadows last Friday night or early Saturday morning.

RCMP Const. Aaron Lloyd said that at some point during the party, the teen was given a "date rape" drug that rendered her unconscious. She was then taken out of the house where the main party was taking place and assaulted by five to seven youths.

Lloyd said several other teens watched the repeated sexual assaults on the girl and at least one of them took photographs.

A 16-year-old youth has been arrested and charged with production of child pornography.

"He not only took the photographs and distributed the photographs, he was clearly present (but) we can't say at this time for certain if he was or was not involved in the sexual assault," Lloyd said.

Cpl. Jennifer Hyland said the pictures of the rape have spread like wildfire through social networking sites and cellphones, despite attempts by police and the victim's family to stop them.

Hyland said many of the youths contacted by police were defiant when asked to stop distributing the pictures.

"They continue to be reposted by other youths who are receiving them and posting them back onto various websites, including Facebook, and are being shared amongst BlackBerrys and iPhones," she said.

"It is spreading like wildfire and our attempts to stop this victim from reliving this … it's just getting worse. The more we try to tell people to take it off the more people send it

A friend mentioned a 12-year old girl at school and her facebook page. She pressed the “Like” button or whatever it is that said something like “Rape is more like surprise sex.”

I would hope this 12-year old just didn’t understand the meanings - but....

And who the heck would come up with that thought in the first place!

I have told my daughters that they need to be careful and not put themselves into these types of situations. And told them it’s just like they were little with our pet dog. “I know you’re just having fun, and he would never mean to hurt you - but he is a dog, and he may bite you just because he is a dog. And I would put him down because of it.”

Who created these warped beasts?

In it, young people are bathed in a society (ours) so alien and backward that it takes awhile...well...to get the shocked look off your face. It’s a research study of high schoolers and college women and what they have been raised to believe and expect. The women’s lib movement said that women are not just sexual objects but are persons with careers, aspirations etc. The current ‘movement’ among young women is to be seen as equal to men in aggression (including sexual) and casual and indifferent about sex in order to fight the stereotype that women want love from men (which is seen as weak, gullible foolishness) at the same moment men want sex from women (refers to the dating scene). In this new scenario - young women try to saunter around seducing or being seduced without a backward glance (rugged, macho detachment, no emotional entanglements). So you have Lady Gaga walking around nearly nude or dressed in raw meat - this is an extension of sexual aggression and the desire to be sexual in the same way that young teen men are or want to be seen as fearlessly sexual and impervious to emotional entanglements. So on the topic of rape, I can see that young women and girls are ‘talking tough’ and ‘posing’ as sexually experienced and fearless. That’s Lady Gaga’s claim - she’s fearless. I believe our young people are saturated with fear and are dreaming up new ways to look fearless as we speak (or write). So that sick ‘like’ button on FB was probably a pose to imply that one is sexually adventurous, willing, and fearless - unafraid of even such crimes as rape (sets them apart from their mothers generation, doesn’t it?) I remember meeting a 22 year old woman who said she was sexually assaulted while traveling in India - she paused and looked coolly over her shoulder at me while saying “But I was too mature to let something like that bother me.” Her comment was intended to wipe the look of compassion off my face - I could tell the assault did bother her very much but it was important to her that she be seen as invulnerable, fearless, above emotional pain etc.

The posting of young people clicking a ‘like’ button about rape of course has nothing to do with reality - either their own level of personal fear or their own misconception of rape. I think it is meant to sexually outrage in a time that has maxed out, run out of, topics of sexual outrage. I believe the young feel preyed upon but desperate not to ‘get hurt’ or ‘get involved’ and most of all, want to be accepted. Strange, sick world unlike any I recall. In the book I mentioned - the college co-eds saw no point in dating and would be baffled if asked out on a date - asking each other WHY would he WANT to...to..date? Caution if you try the book - it’s as explicit as it is depressing. But I am glad I read it because I’d never have guessed the changes in our society without that shocking wake up call.

To me this is a very strange headline. The news is that (1) a gang rape happened, and (2) photos of it are being shared on Facebook. The news is not that the police found it disgusting. Anyone would.

1) bad parents is no excuse for raping a girl in reply to those asking what sort of parents let a girl go to a rave

2) yes I don’t know the facts and neither do you..but that is precisely why I asked what i did

3) I asked if this is a real rape or a gang bang with pics?

4) I don’t know anymore than you do unless you were there but I do know that today we often call teen stupidity rape

5) and we call it rape when an 18 year old has sex with a 16 year old...or even at times a 17 year old...

6) I think it’s all nutty in this hypersexed world where we excuse extreme promiscuity as rape...I saw with my own eyes as a teen in the 70s..girls have sex with as many as 5-10 boys at a time just cause they just wanted to

7) and I wondered if this was a forced rape or that...many feminists and maybe you too in today’s culture think a young woman...especially if drinking has sex with multiple partners voluntarily that it really is rape or assault given the unseemliness of it all...this is just a generational observation I’ve noted and I have seen it used to try to ruin a young man’s life for participating and on the age thing...I guess my 17 year old grandfather raped my 15 year old grandmother in 1923 on their wedding night by these parameters some now hold as the gold standard of what is rape

Thanks for the informative (and scary - I’m a dad of three teenagers!) post. Although that sentence you wrote (above) is probably how it has always been. Just different ways of coping with it. And now the way to “cope” with it is to “just do it” with no strings attached. I hope that my kids will stay on the right path. We have lots of bad examples to point out to them on how just one poor choice can change your life.
