Cornyn: Centrists 'absolutely' welcome in GOP

There's still room for centrists in the Republican Party, the party's Senate campaign chief said Friday.

Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas), the chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC), said relatively centrist GOP senators should feel welcome in the party despite the spate of primary defeats this cycle for similar incumbents and candidates by conservative challengers.

"Absolutely," Cornyn said when asked if centrists are welcome. "People have to understand that this country is a big, diverse country, and not every region and every state is the same."

"I think what matters is what the voters in Maine and what the voters in the individual states think about the senator or the candidate," Cornyn said of how senators such as Susan Collins (R-Maine) might handle the prospect of a Tea Party challenge in 2012.

Cornyn said he recommended those centrist senators "stay in touch" with voters in their home states.

Of course they’re welcome. We’d rather not have them in positions of power and influence, however.

Of course they're welcome, as long as they accept the GOP promoting constitutional originalism as a central tenant.

Question is, are "centrists" welcome in the democrat party?

Cornyn also said in the same interview that he was not part of the DC establishment...I laughed so hard that I spit my Cheerios on my monitor, and so did the interviewer.

Hey, John, you and Kay BH are next in line to be voted OUT!!!!

For "centrists" read "liberals".

What an idiot this guy turned out to be.

Moderates like Cornyn, sure. (And he is a moderate, not a conservative as he claims.)

Liberals like Snowe or Queer Lyndsey Grahmnesty? Nope.

I’d rather have 49 votes.

Here is the problem; What the hell is a centrist!

Either the Republican is a conservative following the party platform and above political corruption or they are a RINO.

RINO = Closet Liberal

Let them start their own party or join Arlen Specter.

One thing to consider when it comes down to “one seat” majority. How much do you trust those guys in those seats to REMAIN Republican?

Don’t need another Jumpin’ Jim Jeffords giving away the Senate to the other team out of spite.

Cornyn cluelessly adopts the other side’s terminology.

We’re not talking about “centrists.” They’re liberal Republicans.

'Centrists' welcomed? Maybe in Cornman's bedroom. Funny thing is - Cornman and McConnell dont call the shots any more!

How sweet it is

I have no problem with “centrists” and “moderates” as long as they follow the constitution and the founding principles of limited government. It’s the “centrists” and “moderates” who have trouble adhering to the founding principles.

Hey Cornyn, how about conservatives? We are? Really?

Oh, I see as long as we know our place in the party...

For public consumption he has to say that whether he means it or not.

The term “Centrist” will take on a new meaning after this election and no longer refer to left of center but right of center to better reflect the voting public. Or else.

This guy is starting to look like a kook. He blows hot and cold.

They are so worried about conservatives turning off their moderates.

It comes as no surprise Cornyn’s happy with more centrists being in the GOP. It’s the conservatives he is having troubles with.
