California Braces for Showdown on Emissions (prop. 23)
New York Times ^ | September 16, 2010 | ADAM NAGOURNEY

LOS ANGELES — A ballot initiative to suspend a milestone California law curbing greenhouse gas emissions is drawing a wave of contributions from out-of-state oil companies, raising concerns among conservationists as it emerges as a test of public support for potentially costly environmental measures during tough economic times.

Charles and David Koch, the billionaires from Kansas who have played a prominent role in financing the Tea Party movement, donated $1 million to the campaign to suspend the Global Warming Solutions Act, which was passed four years ago, and signaled that they were prepared to invest more in the cause. With their contribution, proponents of the proposition have raised $8.2 million, with $7.9 million coming from energy companies, most of them out of state.

This latest embrace by the Koch brothers of a conservative cause jolted environmental leaders who are worried that a vote against the law in this state — with its long history of environmental activism — would amount to a powerful setback for emission control efforts in Washington and statehouses across the country.

“It would have big implications,” said George P. Shultz, the former secretary of state, who is a chairman of a campaign to defeat the ballot initiative. “That is one reason why these outside companies are pouring money in to try to derail the same thing. At the same time, the reverse is true: they put this fat in the fire and if we win, that also sends a message.”

Gene Karpinski, president of the League of Conservation Voters, who has been traveling California to rally support against the proposition, called it “by far the single most important ballot measure to date testing public support for continuing to move to a clean energy economy.”

Doesn’t matter. If the voters overturn it, a federal court will declare the referendum unconstitutional.

It is high times we were rid of pollution of bad environmental laws.

What's wrong with this picture?

The only thing coming out of those well engineered stacks is carbon dioxide, nitrogen and water vapor, yet the NY Slimes makes it a poster for pollution. Even the file name is loaded. (http://graphics8.nytimes.com/images/2010/09/17/us/JP-POLLUTE/JP-POLLUTE-popup.jpg)

The New York Times is a waste of perfectly good paper pulp.

Our uber-elite satanic overlords know they are wrong, this is a last ditch attempt to save the dead horse.

Notice it's now called 'solutions" , that way when nothing happens, they'll say "see, we saved everybody from Glowball warmin'!

Well, I do wish they enginmaneer the FCC stacks a bit more, in all that water vapor is fine catalyst dust which is annoying to lungs and puts a fine gritty dust on everything, cough, cough, I don't like it.

My relatives live less than a mile from one, their Dr. says they have the lungs of a smoker yet they've never smoked.

I'll lay even odds on whether they fix it before or after the asbestos lawyers get done with all their asbestos work.

***The only thing coming out of those well engineered stacks is carbon dioxide, nitrogen and water vapor,***

Years ago, while watching the made for TV movie CENTINNEAL several scenes showed “pollution” coming out of a power plant into Colorado’s beautiful skies.

The “pollution” was water vapor from a series of water cooling towers.

The need to get some better enginmaneers. FCC should be able to capture that and besides some catalysts can be reused. I’m suprised the the EPA isn’t all over that.

"...for potentially costly environmental measures during tough economic times."

The article starts out by lying through omission.

It has already been established that the legislation is a job killer and is driving businesses out of the state due to the cost of compliance.

This is only a "suspension" to the original bill until such time as the CA economy "is better able to support the cost of implementation", whatever the hell that means. I suppose it's by "decree" from some political hack to make that determination as I've yet to see or hear any figure that represents/indicates when the CA "economy is healthy".

But what really galls me is that none of these articles ever want to tell the real truth. The entire premise was built upon falsified data by a CARB hack who paid for an on-line degree from a "university" in Israel operated by a convicted pedophile.

Even after he (the CARB hack) was exposed, CARB still insisted on implementation of the draconian regulations and only "demoted" him vs. firing and incarcerating his sorry ass.

Of the main advertising points to not pass prop 23 is the evil out of state oil money. Nothing about what it will do in California.

The surprise/not surprise is, in this case & I'm sure in many others, the local EPA inspector used to work there.

It's the same with FCC , FDA, etc. and on & on.

Same folks wind up workin' both sides of the fence.

They climb over with such greasy palms it's a wonder those sittin' on the fence don't fall off!

Yes, and don’t you love it when water vapor rising from power plant cooling towers is also called “pollution”?
