France: Sarkozy suggests Roma [Gypsies] 'should be sent to Luxembourg'
The Telegraph ^ | 9/16/2010 | Bruno Waterfield in Brussels

Nicolas Sarkozy has sparked a bitter EU row by suggesting that the European Commissioner who compared his Roma policy to Nazi deportations should offer to host expelled gipsies in her native country of Luxembourg.

Luxembourg reacted with fury as the heated row threatened to engulf the meeting of EU leaders.

"I know that Nicolas Sarkozy has problems with Luxembourgers, but he's gone too far here," said Jean Asselborn, Luxembourg's foreign minister.

France has lashed out at Viviane Reding, a Luxembourger and the EU's justice commissioner, who on Tuesday threatened legal action and described Mr Sarkozy's treatment of Roma as a "disgrace" that reminded her of Second World War round ups of gipsies and Jews.

"For Nicolas Sarkozy to amalgamate the commissioner's nationality and Luxembourg is malevolent. She was not talking for Luxembourg and did not take instructions from Luxembourg," said Mr Asselborn.

Bruno Sido, a French senator, said his country's leader would personally raise the "scandalous" criticism at an EU summit in Brussels on Thursday.

"He said he was only applying European regulations, French laws, and France was irreproachable in the matter but that if the Luxembourgers want to take them he had no problem," said Mr Sido.

French authorities have recently dismantled more than 100 illegal gipsy and traveller camps and deported more than 1,000 Roma, mainly back to Bulgaria and Romania, EU member states.

Both Germany and Bulgaria also waded into the controversy.

Berlin officials on Wednesday expressed support for the European Commission.

"Ethnic minorities should not be discriminated against. If the Commission now wants to examine whether events in France are in accord with this, then it has the perfect right to do so, and the commissioner has the perfect right to make a statement," said a government spokesman.

Georgy Parvanov, the Bulgarian President,

Sarkozy thinks Gypsies should be sent to Luxembourg?

I think Obama has the right idea; send them all back to Gypsum.

Gypsies can be a problem because they will not be controlled or obey government rules. Still, they are popular and seem a harmless distraction. Their code of conduct forbids murder for one thing. Did you know they were from India originally? they were low caste entertainers , dancers and fortune tellers. Jobs they still do along with tinkering, and selling trinkets.

I like Gypsies, had a Gypsie friend once. He was fun to hang out with until him and his whole family went to jail.

I did miss him though

“Their code of conduct forbids murder for one thing.”

Maybe within their individual clans but anyone outside the clan is fair game. Five old men in San Francisco died at the hands of the Tene Bimbo clan between 1984 to 1994.

The case was the Foxglove murders. I am not saying all Gypsies are murderers and thieves but they are far from harmless vagabonds and entertainers and operate within their own moral codes of conduct.

Yes indeed. I sat on a Grand Jury in the late 80’s. Several of the cases we heard involved Gypsie fortune tellers bilking some simple minded people out of 10’s of thousands of dollars. Lives and marriages were ruined as a result. The elderly were favorite targets.

I remember some rich Gypsies fantasizing about hooking up with skinheads and killing the poorer Gypsies.

I figured they’d probably get around to killing the Africans and others they didn’t like.

They’re whole code of conduct was they got theirs and they’re gonna make sure cousin Yonko doesn’t take it.Real romantic when you think about it.

Like Sarkozy said if Luxembourg is cranky about this.........have them.

my only direct contact with gypsies was in, of all places, Chile, where 2 female gypsies attempted to scam (without allusion to other compensation) a friend and mine of some cash with some stupid game trick.

Having seen this, I do not find it too hard to believe that they are not welcome in many european countries as well, since the stories I have read on this are not dissimilar to my own experience.

I was channeling Obama in sarcasm. I have had dealings with the Roma, in Italy. They are a pain in the a$$.
