Shocking testimony reveals police inaction in Conn. horror home invasion

Podunk local cops wasted more than half an hour assessing the Connecticut home invasion and setting up a vehicle perimeter -- time the two attackers used to strangle the mother in her living room and set the fire that claimed the lives of the two girls upstairs, according to shocking testimony today.

The revelation -- which suggests perhaps the family could have been saved but for police bungling -- came on day three of testimony in the murder trial of crack addict Steven Hayes, charged as one of the two monsters who launched a rein of rape and murder against a Cheshire, CT family on a Monday morning in July, 2007.

Here's the horrifying chronology of inaction, according to trial documents and testimony:

9:17 a.m. Nurse and mother of two Jennifer Hawke-Petit, 48, receives a time-stamped receipt for a $15,000 withdrawal from a local bank teller. The terrified mom has bravely told the teller and the manager that she, her husband Dr. William Petit, and their daughters, Hayley, 17 and Michaela, 11, were being held hostage in their home, and that she needed the money for ransom. Bank employees watch as Hawke-Petit takes the cash, and is driven away from the bank, allegedly by defendant Hayes.

9:21 a.m. Bank manager Mary Lyons calls 911, relaying Hawke-Petit's account, and specifying that the mom appeared "petrified."

9:26 a.m. (see article for full timeline and commentary)...

It's good to have a gun for self-defense.
It's bad to think that the government will rescue you.

If you are facing a home invasion, tell the police dispatcher that you are an anonymous information who spotted marijuana in the house... then a whole goon squad will bust down the doors pronto.

Yeah, this is horrible.

People have just got to wake up and quit relying on someone else to protect them when it comes to crime. You’ve just got to protect yourself.

I sometimes think dialing 911 is a bad idea because people have come to rely on it, depend on it, and just give up on defending themselves.

I’m not saying it was their fault at all, either.

I know it’s not the bank’s fault, but couldn’t they have tried to convince the mom not to leave with the perp? WTH?

Domestic Violence is an even better claim. I’ve seen it. SWAT team called, house raided.

Daughters held hostage, I think. Sounds like it isn’t that simple.

Every bank that gets knocked over is a potential hostage situation.

This is just like all the shooters at schools and malls. The SWAT team shows up, and by the time they get all their elaborate gear set up, the shooter has finished the job and shot himself. Apparently, these SWAT guys like playing cop, but don’t want to act like cops.

Michael Savage spent most of his show on this crime tonight. His bottom line was for every person sixteen or older to be armed, skilled and ready to defend.

At the end three people were killed.
The husband survived.
In the morning the husband, Dr. Petit, had his wife call to say he was sick.

“Apparently, these SWAT guys like playing cop, but don’t want to act like cops.”

Traditionally, the role of the police was to show up after citizens had handled the problem and do the paperwork, cleanup, and body disposal. there might e a court inquiry as to what had happened, to be sure the citizens acted appropriately.

You cannot rely on the police to keep you safe, and the Supreme Court has backed that concept several times.

Send up your meanest, baddest, most mad dog crazy cop full of Twinkies and donuthole sugar to kick the door in, step inside armed with a 9mm and fan that room like a pro. If a hostage dies as a result, kill on sight.

That’s a little hinky...that the husband, the man of the house survived. His wife killed and his daughters raped and burned, yet he survived? One would have thought they would have had to kill him to be able to accost the women.

Law Enforcement - when seconds count, they'll be there in minutes.

Having a firearm for home defense is just prudent.

Give the guy a break. He did what little he could under the circumstances.

Petit, who would be the sole survivor of the invasion, had broken free from the basement, and -- bleeding profusely from blows to the head, and with his ankles still bound -- was rolling his body across two yards to summon help.

Most police are unionized. Their main priority is their own safety and job security. The slogans some carry on their patrol cars like “we serve and protect” are BS.

The murderers broke in while everyone was sleeping, beat him with a baseball bat until he was unconscious then tied him up. They raped the 11 year old daughter, the 17 year old daughter, and the wife. They strangled the wife before setting the house on fire which killed both daughters.
