Washington (CNN) - Republican Senator Jim DeMint conceded to CNN that he is trying to send a message to the GOP establishment by backing conservative candidates like Christine O'Donnell in Delaware, but rejects concerns that his moves could rob the GOP of the Senate majority.
"The GOP establishment is out," DeMint said in an interview in his Senate office, "what we're going to do is help the American people take back their government, and I hope the Republican Party will be the party that carries that banner."
DeMint was an early supporter of O'Donnell, a candidate many Republicans did not want, because they fear she is too conservative to win in a blue state like Delaware.
DeMint conceded that it will be "tougher" for O'Donnell to win than it would have been for her defeated, moderate opponent, Rep. Mike Castle, but he also argued that "Americans who live in Delaware love their country and they're not stupid."
"We're at the edge of a cliff of financial disaster in our country. I think the terms of moderate or conservative really trivialize something. The stakes are too high to use those terms. This is really a difference between survival and bankruptcy as a nation. People of Delaware understand that New Hampshire all over the country so I think this year is going to be different," said DeMint.

He has my vote!
I bet that shut up CNN. They are used to apologetic Collaborators.
Dontcha love the way they hack up and put sentences in an article that suits them, not the way the actual conversation went....
Nah, me either.
This primary has given us all a perfect opportunity to witness up close and personal the petty, small-minded nature of the establishment republican party, in the forms of both Castle and Cornyn, both for their petulant refusals to support and fund O’Donnell. If the TEA party faction of the GOP has demonstrated anything, it is its long memory and firm sense of resolve when at the polls.
Castle has proven what most have known all along: That he is a liberal democrat. It can be expected that he will throw his support, and as many votes as he can inspire, behind the democrat senate candidate for Delaware in November. What will Cornyn do?
Castle and Cornyn. We will not forget. And, sooner or later, we’re coming for you at the polls.
“Demitt, you are MAGNIFICENT!
Gotta love DeMint. He tells it like it is.
Demint, you are MAGNIFICENT!
“Though he says he does not want to be POTUS, he wants to lead Congress/Senate in the right direction. We need him there.”
Exactly! DeMint needs to the Majority Leader. We need Palin to be the President.
Exactly - Rove, Cornyn, Castle, Bush, et al are not one of us.
Go home you RINO POFS!
The GOP has to come together behind this candidate immediately. Unity! The bickering has to stop RIGHT NOW.
If we work together, we can get her in. If the party conservative stars like DeMint get behind her, make some well-timed personal appearances, get their message on the same page, they can do it.
When the left-wingers come after her, they have to do this: TIE EVERY ATTACK DIRECTLY TO BARACK HUSSEIN OBAMA. It’s exactly as simple as that. Over and over and over again, until she’s elected this November.
I think he would make an EXCELLENT nominee and president.
Love that DeMint!
I heard DeMint this morning on Fox News, he is a classy guy and would make a great President. We need more of him in Washington DC to fix the mess the Democrats have made
Lindsay Graham - primary challenge in 2014 Olympia Snowe - primary challenge in 2012 Susan Collins - primary challenge in 2014 Richard Lugar - primary challenge in 2012 Judd Gregg - After withdrawing from his nomination to become United States Secretary of Commerce in the presidential administration of Democrat Barack Obama on February 12, 2009, Gregg said he would "probably not" seek reelection in 2010, when his term of office is set to expire - good riddance!
Wow. He said it without sugar coating. Great man.
