State Republicans moved the three-way U.S. Senate race to a new level Saturday, with party leaders pointing to an audit of their books they say implies Gov. Charlie Crist now an independent candidate for U.S. Senate ran up potentially "hundreds of thousands" of dollars in inappropriate charges.
Party Chairman and state Sen. John Thrasher said the expenses came to light during the just-completed forensic audit by Alston & Bird LLP which was the examiner in energy giant Enron's 2002 bankruptcy. He said the party may sue their former standard bearer to get the money back.
The announcement is rife with political implications, given that Crist and Republican Senate candidate Marco Rubio are running neck and neck in many polls, with Democrat Kendrick Meek a distant third.
The review, which the party did not make public but may release later, was initiated earlier this year after former state GOP Chairman Jim Greer was forced from office, in part by accusations of extravagant spending. Thrasher, who took Greer's place, discussed the report's findings after a three-hour, closed-door meeting with the party's executive board at Disney's Boardwalk Resort.
He said auditors found that Crist, Greer and Delmar Johnson, the party's former executive director, may have inappropriately spent money on travel, consultants, meetings and other items not related to party business.
Thrasher provided no firm numbers but said Greer could owe "hundreds of thousands" of dollars and that Crist was in "that ballpark." Thrasher said party officials would spend the next 10 days considering a lawsuit against Crist, Greer and Johnson.
Crist abandoned the Republican Party in April and, since then, has been hammered by the party as a turncoat, liar and political chameleon.

I like Marco Rubio’s line: “There are three candidates running for Senate in Florida, a Republican, a Democrat, and an Opportunist.
Please ping other Floridians to this thread......BUMP
Christ? Isn’t that a close friend of Obama?
Christ? Isnt that a close friend of Obama?

Charlie’s last name is CRIST with no ‘H’ and it’s pronounced like ‘Krist’
Payback is a bitch, Loafers.
Add unethical and a thief to the mix, and you have him.
So the GOP probably lets people on their dole abuse it so they can use it as a weapon later if they get out of line...
And no, I’m not defending Crist. Good riddance.
OH SNAP! My boo-boo. And WHAT a boo-boo.
These days, anymore, that qualifies Crist for the "politician of the year" award.
The GOP needs to be much more selective and only promote people with principles, integrity and character. Otherwise Republican politicians just become more of the same.
I suspect Jim Greer, the former Fla GOP Chairman and under indictment for felony charges is singing like a bird.
A couple of days ago, we learned Crist gave Greer $10,000.
Is it an attempt to buy Greer’s silence?
Crist was pretty much done before this announcement. He has a fork in him now.
Could not happen to a nicer Skunk.
Not to mention fake suntanned faggot.
Not the first thing he's had in him, if you know what I mean.
If I recall corectly, Greer wanted a return of his campaign donation which was made when Charlie was a ‘Republican’.
I never connected with Crist (he’s my Governor, although he doesn’t seem to do that job anymore), even when the Heritage Foundation (or the Cato Institute) pumped his early economic record — later he became more liberal and then started hugging Obama and chickening out of tough primaries. The fake bake tan and vague homosexual/metrosexual vibe always turned me off.
You are correct.
