HA... .people here are pretty conservative overall. There is a broad base for employment spread over a number of diverse industries. Did not have much of a housing bubble, no big impact of foreclosures. In general we do not make many risky financial moves. People work very hard and cling to their guns and religion... taking extra jobs to make things work when they need to, consciously trying to spend locally when possible.
On the other hand... I was in the hair salon the other day, having my hair cut by the shop owner, who is a small business owner who has tanning beds and health insurance. A USMC vet from Viet Nam era. We were chatting about local taxes. In walked a young lady of about 30-ish who sat in the next chair. She started right in on how she had watched 0bama make a speech on TV that morning, and how he was doing such a good job and trying so hard. She said he was trying to cut taxes for 97% of the people, but the Republicans keep voting it down. She said that she believes in his heart he thinks he is doing the right thing. Then another older lady, probably around 70?, chimed in about what a mess 0bama inherited and the Republicans had messed everything up, and if not for them, 0bama would be hugely successful.
I felt like I had been transported to an alternate realty.
