Cuba to eliminate 500,000 state jobs, spur private sector

HAVANA — Cuba will let more than 500,000 state employees go by next March and try to move most to non-state jobs in the biggest shift to the private sector since the 1960s, the official Cuban labor federation said Monday. The layoffs will start immediately and run through the first half of next year, according to an announcement Monday by the nearly 3 million-strong Cuban Workers Confederation — the only labor union the government tolerates. The statement said eventually more than a million jobs would be cut and, due to efforts to increase efficiency in the state sector, there would be few new state sector openings. More than 85 percent of the Cuban labor force, or over 5 million people, worked for the state at the close of 2009, according to the government. "Our state cannot and should not continue maintaining companies, productive entities, services and budgeted sectors with bloated payrolls (and) losses that hurt the economy," the statement said. "Job options will be increased and broadened with new forms of non-state employment, among them leasing land, cooperatives and self-employment, absorbing hundreds of thousands of workers in the coming years," it said.

So Obama’s left of Castro? Wow.

Castro never was much of a Communist. He instead was a big fan of Hitler and Alexander the Great. He chose Communism as a matter of practicality. He got a lot of support from the Soviets and they were common enemies with the United States. Plus Raoul was a believer in Chinese Communism along with Che. We should expect to see Cuba follow the path of the Chinese now that Raoul has more control.

Not is all gloom for the good folks of Cuba. At least everyone still gets free healthcare from the best medical system in the world. Fidel may wear a bag, but it is one of the very finest bags in the world, installed by one of the best medical practitioners in the world.

Didn't Castro have to secretly go to Spain to get his life saving operation?

Sounds like wishful thinking to me. How are these jobs just supposed to magically exist in the private sector? Is there even a private sector IN Cuba?

Fidel admitted that the communist model hasn’t worked in Cuba, so 0bama called him up and said, “then you don’t mind if I borrowed it?”

Cuba will let more than 500,000 state employees go

That's crazy. Why don't they just tax the rich to save those government jobs? /s

Even Hugo Chavez has backed off and has allowed some reprivatization of resources in Venezuela.

This could just be a ploy to get us to lift the embargo. But, we should lift it anyway.

If the USSR could go under, Cuba certainly could. When Castro dies, I'm heading to Miami for the party, then checking out Cuban real estate.

It's true! This has been going on for at least 20 years. If you want to experience freedom, go to South America or Asia. They may have lefty governments, but they are a joke. Day to day life is like a nostalgic dream for Americans.

The frog is boiled.

Fidel Castro 2012! B-P /sarc>

It's a bummer when they, the Castro Bros., start to get it (even somewhat) but Obama/Pelosi/Reid, do not.

That does it I’m moving to Fido’s country. if only, if only he saw this during the days of the Bay of Pigs, Cuban Missile crisis, Angola, so much; but Russia fed them a big fat juicy lie and Fido ate it up then went back to his vomit for 50+ years. Fido will now be called Fidel Castro, numbah one BOOM BOOM , ha, He’s finally had a come to Jesus moment. I can only pray Obama heeds the warning but he’s too pig headed probably to just move more to the middle, and start dumping the spending.

oh yeah, putting 500,000 unemployed useless state workers that are absolutely good for nothing into the job pool of an almost extinct economy will spur teh private sector alright... i'm just not sure to what end

Isn’t it funny that Castro denounced communism and told arackmaloonyjad he was nuts and is FORCED into downsizing just like his comrade Obama?
