HAVANA Cuba will let more than 500,000 state employees go by next March and try to move most to non-state jobs in the biggest shift to the private sector since the 1960s, the official Cuban labor federation said Monday. The layoffs will start immediately and run through the first half of next year, according to an announcement Monday by the nearly 3 million-strong Cuban Workers Confederation the only labor union the government tolerates. The statement said eventually more than a million jobs would be cut and, due to efforts to increase efficiency in the state sector, there would be few new state sector openings. More than 85 percent of the Cuban labor force, or over 5 million people, worked for the state at the close of 2009, according to the government. "Our state cannot and should not continue maintaining companies, productive entities, services and budgeted sectors with bloated payrolls (and) losses that hurt the economy," the statement said. "Job options will be increased and broadened with new forms of non-state employment, among them leasing land, cooperatives and self-employment, absorbing hundreds of thousands of workers in the coming years," it said.

REminds me of when upon divorcing my overspending not yet ex, she would say money needed to be saved to get a house.
Too late.
Paging Michael Moore!
Obama is doing more for free market economics globally than anyone in history.
This is all hooey — you can’t think of it in our terms or compare it to us or the normal world in any way —
especiallly the part about the only union that the gov’t there “tolerates” — over the years, workers who have tried to organize have been executed.
Ther is no private enterprise or private ownership — you can go to rpison for a year if you sell a lemon that fell off a tree in your backyard — this is all just to get $ from the U.S. and the rest of the world.
about 10 million. By definition, in a communist country, everyone is an employee of the state.
There is no “private sector” in Cuba. Communism is the absence of a private sector.
Excvept not, because there a person working at a otel or restaurant or movie theater or hospital or school or farm or ...anything — is a government employee. THere is no private enterprise, there are no jobs — unless you count prostitution. And many of the prostitutes are doctors and teachers.
Please remember that the state owns everything. THere is no private enterprise, so that statement shouldn’t be interpreted as if it wedre happening here.
It’s pretty sad that Cuba is to the right of Obama.
In future, I plan to spend my summers in St. Petersburg, Russia and my winters in Havana away from the neo-socialist, secular, ACLU corrupted, homosexual infested, financially ruined, US of A.
Geeze Louise! Cuba is just too big to fail. Wonder how much of our money The Messiah is going to want to send Castro?
Good point.
American Left goes into mourning, wears black armbands. Michael Moore, Oliver Stone, and Steven Spielberg make emergency appointments with their therapists.
We have officially entered Bizarro World.
Not is all gloom for the good folks of Cuba. At least everyone still gets free healthcare from the best medical system in the world. Fidel may wear a bag, but it is one of the very finest bags in the world, installed by one of the best medical practitioners in the world.
Obama/Reid/Pelosi’s policies are causing 500K jobs to leave the USA... Coincidence?
Castro 2010
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!
I heard that Obama is already offering them citizenship and jobs working for our socialist government.
