WASHINGTON First lady Michelle Obama is prodding the nation's restaurants to add more healthy options to menus, label those items more prominently and market nutritious foods to kids.
Speaking to the National Restaurant Association on Monday, Mrs. Obama pleaded with restaurants small and large to take a little butter or cream out of their dishes, use low fat milk and provide apple slices or carrots as a default side dish on the kids' menu.
Mrs. Obama said that Americans are spending half their food dollars outside the home and eating a third of meals in restaurants. She asked the restaurants to rethink the food they offer and reformulate their menus to help combat childhood obesity.
"We have to do more, we have to go farther, and we need your help to lead this effort," she told the restaurateurs and executives.
The first lady has delivered similar messages to schools and the nation's largest food companies as part of her effort to boost childhood nutrition. She told the restaurant industry that parents' choices at restaurants need to be easier, and healthy options shouldn't be buried on the menu.

Never could understand child’s menu’s in restaurants. Just order them some meat/chicken/fish and then vegetables, potato and some salad. That’s what we did. If they don’t eat it all take it home. Children should learn to eat good nutritional healthy foods from day one when they go off the bottle. We always fixed our meals. We ate our dinner and that’s what the kids had too. Then dessert and then later some cookies, candy or milk. they also were allowed candy or sweets throughout the day but they had to eat their dinner. Was a simple rule and they really didn’t get all that hungry after a meal either. What they had was filling and then their dessert. All eaten at the table and not running around the house with drinks and food.
If my husband were running for President or was President...I wouldn’t have to manufacture some cause. First off I would be a champion for children who have cancer. I would probably do what I could to further advance the cause of St. Jude Research Hospital for children. All are cared for...all are loved and the children are incredible given what they are going through. THAT would be my cause...other than that...I would just be the First Lady in name but would not be out there trying to be something I wasn’t. It would be my HUSBAND who was elected...not ME.
Laura Bush may not have done hula hoops but...she DID power walk every day. Probably still does.
kidding, right?
She has also guzzled her fair share of lobsters loaded with butter and bottles of champagne. Heaven knows how many steaks, filet mignons, and also she has likely enjoyed pelnty of friend chicken. I wonder how many gallons of caviar she’s consumed too.
The recipe sounds good! BTW, when has that Woman(The BIG Mo”)EVER actually COOKED an entire meal for her family????
Ah...all of the 20 somethings in my office play ‘can you top this?’. New toys, new cars, etc etc etc. But, not so much of late. Even the guy in the office next to me... The one who always has the latest and greatest... Was eating PB and j for lunch today. No sympathy here.
Yeah that, and your previous image are what I’m talking about. It’s crazy, I mean does she approve these images? Does she think they make her look strong and like a leader? Personally I think they make her look, to put it delicately, “demanding”.
Ugh.
“Demanding!” Good word. I won’t be surprised if her kids come out with a “Mommy Dearest” type book some time in the future. :)
Perhaps a tanked economy encourages better eating (less eating).
