A Fiery Unknown Ruffles New York’s RepublicansBy MICHAEL BARBARO Published: September 12, 2010 LinkedinDiggMixxMySpaceYahoo! BuzzPermalink. RIVERHEAD, N.Y. — Inside an Elks’ lodge here in the heart of middle-class Long Island, a crowd of 150 Tea Party members erupted into thunderous applause over the weekend when Carl P. Paladino, the resurgent Republican candidate for governor, outlined his plan to tame New York’s entrenched political class.

Nathaniel Brooks for The New York Times Carl P. Paladino, a Republican candidate for governor of New York, says, “I’m taking a baseball bat to Albany with me.”

Rick A. Lazio, who has Republican leaders’ backing, is being challenged by Mr. Paladino in the primary. “I’m taking a baseball bat to Albany with me,” he told them, setting off shouts of “God bless you!” and “Go get ’em!”

But on the eve of the Republican primary, members of the state’s anxious party establishment are worried that Mr. Paladino is also swinging at them.

Party leaders, after assuming that former Representative Rick A. Lazio of Long Island would coast to victory in the election on Tuesday, find themselves racing to shore up support for their nominee and to beat back an unexpectedly robust challenge from Mr. Paladino, a businessman from Buffalo and a newcomer to politics.

As polling over the weekend suggested that a once-lopsided race was suddenly too close to call, Mr. Lazio crisscrossed the state to lock down votes. Allies rushed out a new series of television ads highlighting his conservative credentials. And after ignoring Mr. Paladino for months, Mr. Lazio openly questioned his fitness to be governor, declaring in an ad released on Sunday that he “can’t be trusted and shouldn’t be believed.”

What about all of the money he supposedly donated to John Kerry, Hillary Clinton, et al?

I am just asking the question that was brought up on a recent ad I heard. I am totally ignorant of the claim being made.

He was a businessman back then he never was in politics

In ny state you donated to everyone if you ever wanted to be heard

He donated to republicans AND democraps

He has always been a conservative, he never got involved in politics, but friends asked him to make donations and so he made donations.

That in NO WAY outweighs RINO Ricky Lazio’s LIFE LONG liberal record.

I plan to vote for Carl. I still have a bad taste in my mouth over the Lazio/Clinton debate. He let that carpetbagger walk away with the Senate win because he has no guts. Bye bye Rick.

What I have been hearing from my Republiban friends is that Libs are going out there promoting the Tea Party candidates so they can get beat in November by Lib candidates.

I have a feeling this is going to backfire on them big time.

everything about Lazio is false and misleading

That is THE ONLY THING HE HAS

He is a pro-abortion, anti-gun RINO and has no plan for New York - and Cuomo would leave his heel marks next to Hillary’s all over Lazio’s backside

The New York GOP and CONSERVATIVE party are ENTRENCHED ESTABLISHMENT RINO’s

This seems to be one instance where the Tea Party (or at least someone within the Tea Party movement) has it wrong.

Lazio may be a RINO, true, but I wouldn't even call Paladino a Republican, not after seeing his FEC federal candidate contribution record with my own eyes. He has contributed to the likes of Hillary Rodham Clinton, Al Gore, Mike Dukakis, and Chuckie Schumer, plus assorted other 'Rats. By contrast there are NO federal contributions listed made by Lazio to any 'Rats!

(BTW, he also gave a small contribution to none other than Rick Lazio when Lazio ran for the Senate.)

No one wishing to to promote a conservative agenda for the country would give these 'Rat candidates a cent. You have to consider Paladino a phony and an opportunist.

See #5 above.

I’m not sure he even has a chance; I just think the race will be much more interesting with him in it.

Lazio’s not getting any traction.

Sorry. The guy is a businessman. Businessman give money for access, and you don't get much access giving money to Republicans in NY. Disqualify him and you need to disqualify nearly all businessman which is just what the school teachers would like.

Personally I like the fact that Lazio quotes the NY Times calling Paladino the "Bigot from Buffalo." I think we could all use a bigot from Buffalo.

I hope you'll vote for him tomorrow.

...you don't get much access giving money to Republicans in NY.

Well, if you'd rather give your money to 'Rats in general, you are helping to perpetuate them in power and you are working to keep Republicans out of office. So it's a question of "which side are you on" as far as Paladino is concerned.

And with Paladino, we are talking about his giving to Dem presidential and congressional campaigns, so he's helping them to control the whole federal government, never mind New York state government.

If he'd rather sit at their table, fine, but don't tell the public you're a conservative Republican, unless you've decided for some reason to make a bona fide switch from 'Rat to Pubbie.

Just remember that your friends will be voting for Paladino, not Lazio the Loser who is just the next guy in line. The same sort of strategy was evident with Bush, Dole, Bush, and McCain. The Party Leadership needs to hear from you that this is no longer acceptable. Maybe Lazio didn't contribute to the Commodities Scam Queen, but he put her in the Senate.
