Sen. Bennett: Public has 'no understanding' of Congress By Jordan Fabian - 09/13/10 09:21 AM ET
The public has "no understanding" of what Congress does and has unrealistic expectations of its members, outgoing GOP Sen. Bob Bennett (Utah) said recently.
In a wide-ranging interview with NBC News posted Monday, Bennett, whom Utah Republicans declined to renominate in May, knocked down the image of the Senate as the world's greatest debating body and said that most work is done in committee and behind closed doors. He also suggested that much of the business senators deal with are not of interest to them.
"They have no understanding of what we do. They expect that we spend most of our time on the Senate floor debating," he said. "The image of Webster and Calhoun and Clay changing the course of the Republic with a brilliant speech is still in their minds. Particularly since the advent of television in the chamber, Senate speeches are more and more irrelevant."
Bennett said that floor speeches are meant to create "snippets to show up in the nightly news that we hope will change the attitude of the people," not influence colleagues.

well maybe we have an understanding of him
Where’s the transparency?
IMHO CSPAN channels should be made free and available to every single television in the US for free.
The people are stupid speech.
Wanna bet, loser? The fact we do know what you people are doing is a solid reason for your congressional demise.
How dare them. Shameful
They should have no business outside of what we are interested in.
Job description: Represent the voters. done.
Congress doesn’t understand the people.
That's why sane folks are going to replace the feckless fools like you and maybe then you will understand how the peoples’ work is done.
” most work is done in committee and behind closed doors. He also suggested that much of the business senators deal with are not of interest to them. “
And that’s why Mr. Bennett is a soon-to-be EX-Senator — we’re just no longer willing to “sit down, shut up, and let our ‘betters’ handle things”.....
How about this -
no more abdicating of your role as THE lawmaking branch of government to the other two, especially to the regulatory agencies in the executive branch.
Nothing having the force of law, with the ability to punish for non-compliance, should exist except for bills introduced in congress, passed, and signed by the president.
I think we understand all to well. It’s congress critters that have the blindspot.
Ahem, it’s Congress’ job to make us understand them, they work for us.
Well, well, well. Ruling class telling the people what to think. Who knew?
Did he say this before or after the screen door hit him in the azz on the way out...
Verification of his non-suitability for candidacy.
Yeah, that's why congress' poll numbers are so low, because we hold you in such high esteem.
