Schieffer presses Boehner on smoking

CBS News anchor Bob Schieffer got personal with the top House Republican on "Face the Nation" Sunday, asking him whether he’d consider kicking his smoking habit if he becomes speaker.

Schieffer, a former smoker and cancer survivor, noted that House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) has taken $340,000 from the tobacco industry during the course of his career. The discussion:

Bob Schieffer: "They've been the largest contributor to your political campaigns over the year. How do you square that with the fact that cigarette smoking is the leading cause of preventable deaths in this country, 435,000 people, their deaths are linked to cancer, that's 1 in 5. How do you justify that in your own mind?"

I hope that, either, Mike Pence, or Michele Bachmann becomes the next Speaker of the House.

I like both of them and would be delighted to see either one become Speaker.

Boehner...not so much.

Though he'd still be a tad better than that witch we have in that position now.

“Well, I mean, if you should become Speaker, you could set a good example for the country by saying ‘I’m going to stop smoking,’” Schieffer said. “Maybe you could get the President - I understand he smokes too, - maybe the two of you could find a way to try to stop smoking. That’d be kind of a good thing, wouldn’t it?”

"His own party's club won't let him light up, so House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) has been sneaking over to the National Democratic Club to smoke. Ironic, and a tad scandalous -- considering Boehner sits on the board of the Capitol Hill Club, where Republican members of Congress do their boozing and schmoozing.

But the Capitol Hill Club, unlike the Democratic Club, never got an exemption to get around the District's new smoking ban. And Boehner and other members are no longer allowed to smoke in the House Speaker's Lobby, thanks to Nancy Pelosi's (D-Calif.) new rules. So what else is a Republican to do when he's jonesing for a smoke?

Here’s my answer to that question: “Bob, I smoke for the children. If little Timmy can’t get that operation he needs to save his life because I didn’t buy a pack of Barclays I don’t think I could live with the guilt.”

Liberals who don’t like tobacco smoke, make it illegal for others to use tobacco.

I do not see any difference between America and the Nanny state. The former is now the personification of the latter. Pretty much the populated areas anyway, however redoubts of individualism and liberty still prevail in the West and the South, but the WestCoast and the Northeast are bastions of NinnyNannyism.
