Politicians' understanding of 2nd Amendment: Oblivious to on target
Gun Rights Examiner ^ | 12 September, 2010 | David Codrea

"BEING A NEW Congressman," Rep. David S. King (UT) wrote, "I have not as yet had any opportunity to learn enough about the issues involved with the Second Amendment to speak with any conviction on the matter one way or the other."

Really? Then how in the world did this guy ever get elected, and what made him--and more importantly, his constituents--think he was qualified and competent to be entrusted with power to legislate legitimately?

King was writing in response to GUNS Magazine's "Know Your Lawmakers," a regular feature in the magazine where politicians responded to a request to give their view on the right to keep and bear arms.

Did I mention King wrote this 50 years ago? Every month, GUNS posts issues from half a century before on its website, giving us a great window into a past some of us are old enough to remember (See "Related Articles," below). A free download of the September 1960 issue is now online.

One of the regular features from that era was "Know Your Lawmakers," where those who were supposed to represent us got a chance to show how well they understood their duties and how faithfully they executed their oaths of office. Here are some highlights from this issue:

Showing he understood was Rep. Richard E. Lankford, of Maryland of all places, and, as I found by looking his name up, a Democrat to boot:

THE REASONS behind the Second Amendment are as valid today as they were when the Founding Fathers wrote the Constitution.

What anti-individual totalitarian collectivists/gangs/criminals have done to unarmed innocent individuals and their families throughout history is an abomination.

a congressman unaware of the constitution...? color my ass shocked.

the people in america that require firearms do, in prodigious numbers.

they do because there are vast numbers of dangerous peopl who also posses such firearms. such aforementioned so called representatives of a people and a republic they do not comprehend only further the numbers of armed and dangerous people, be they lawful or criminal.

the shame is that the lawless carry freely. the law abiding do not, and walk their land in fear because their state will ruin their life if they take precaution to save such..

the enforcement mechanism in the us is now as dangerous to the citizen as the criminal class.

i consider any man with a badge same as i consider any tattooed gangbanger asking to screw my wife.

i guess i now hate everyone.

BEING A NEW Congressman,” Rep. David S. King (UT) wrote, “I have not as yet had any opportunity to learn enough about the issues involved with the Second Amendment

LOL!!! Is that a joke? Let me spell it out.

“The right of the people to keep & bear arms shall not be infringed.”

Ever heard of that document? - I can get my 8 year old to explain it to him.
Any more complicated issues like free speech that you need explained?
Or do Americans need to become elected officials to understand those arcane concepts?
