A parliamentary commission has found they should be tried for the negligence that led to the country's 2008 banking and financial meltdown
The Icelandic parliament was expected to meet today to debate the commission's finding and decide whether to appoint a prosecutor and judges for the Landsdomur for the first time since this special court for trying government officials was set up in 1905.
"This is a serious accusation against our political system, our politicians, the parliament, stockmarket . . . it is a problem we must confront," Social Democrat Prime Minister Johanna Sigurdardottir said yesterday.

If you want to put someone on trial, it is the American people who for several generations cannot find a socialist measure they would dislike. "Bigger and bigger government," they demand and elect the corresponding politicians, whether Republican or Democrat. It was the government that created the current crisis, and it was freely elected by the People. Just like in 1930s Germany. Hitler did not lie to anybody; he did what he promised to do and was accordingly celebrated by the German people. It is they who chose fascism and racism; it is they who thus perpetrated the atrocities.
We are guilty of the same. We have twice elected Bush, who did not do a single conservative thing. He was a patriot, no doubt, but tried to buy the Mexican vote just like Obama. He grew the gov by 56%. And, he was very proud that the home-ownership has increased --- that very thing that brought the economy down.
Witch hunts always are. That is why we considered them unAmerican.
