A BRISBANE-based atheist has risked inflaming political and religious tensions by posting a video on YouTube showing him burning pages from both the Koran and the Bible.
The video, by lawyer and Brisbane Atheists member, Alex Stewart, 29, comes as international outrage continues over the proposed burning of multiple copies of the Koran by a radical Christian pastor in the US.
Yesterday, the president of the Australian Federation of Islamic Councils, Ikebal Patel, slammed the video.
"I think it's highly offensive that he has done this to two of the holiest books in the world," Mr Patel said.
"It does not in any way add any value to trying to promote world peace and the consideration of different views - especially when there are heightened tensions around the anniversary of September 11 and the Eid el Fitr (end of Ramadan) celebrations."
The 12-minute YouTube video, one of more than 90 posted by Mr Stewart, shows the Queensland University of Technology-employed lawyer tearing pages from both books and using the paper to roll what looks to be marijuana cigarettes.
After smoking both he gives marks out of 10 - rating the Bible as a better burner than the Koran.

They’re just books, folks.
omg. Looks like all the attention whores of all sides are crawling out of their ratholes on a global stage. Daddy didn´t love me so i need my 5 minutes “fame” in the media...
Actually they're both more than "just books." Mein Kampf was more than just a book too. Some of us are able to differentiate.

If ya gottem smoke em.
“Lawyers” do a lot of goofy sh*t.
” Smoke ‘em if ya got ‘em!”
have any Christians threatened the guy?
Burning Bibles is safe; burning the Qu’ran, not so much.
Make him Secretary of the United Nations ASAP!!!
No, they’re all just books...binding and pages with printed words in various languages.
It’s the ideas in the books that make or break them. One of the books you mention is a living breathing set of writings that tell a compelling and cohesive story of loss and redemption, of sin and separation from God and of forgiveness and love, but with judgement. It doesn’t need multiple hadiths to explain it and it never advances forced domination of others.
True believers worship the God of that book, not the book itself. The same cannot be said of the others.
The people protesting his burning pages from the koran will issue a fatwa to kill him, his family, his pets and they will chant death to America, death to Australia and death to Israel.
He’ll prefer to smoke his Koran pages unfiltered.
If you think Mein Kampf is too holy to desecrate, I don’t really know what to say to you.
I heard Brisbane and Sydney are on fire...</sarcasm>
Christians will be praying for this man. Mooselimbs will be calling for his head and the lives of his wife, daughters, sisters and anyone else in his family who wears a skirt.
I hope he smokes in bed and set’s himself on fire.
I wont threaten him any more than I would any other lawyer.
Shakespeare had it right!
This must indicate there are no good lawyers
or mascots now. What has become of this world?
