People with chronic pain who took just a puff of marijuana three times a day got some mild pain relief and, with rare exceptions, did so without getting high, a Canadian study reports. (Yes, they inhaled.)
The patients, who suffered from persistent nerve damage that did not respond to other pain drugs, also reported better sleep and less anxiety, the researchers said.
The study is one of the first randomly controlled clinical trials to test the pain-relieving properties of smoked marijuana and of its active ingredient, tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, said Dr. Mark A. Ware, a pain researcher at McGill University in Montreal who was lead author of the paper, published in The Canadian Medical Association Journal.
Twenty-one adult volunteers, all of them with intractable pain, completed the trial, which compared three different formulations of marijuana with various concentrations of THC along with a placebo version, a formulation with no THC at all...

And probably without liver damage (Tylenol), kidney damage (NSAIDs), or addiction (opiates).
If it eases the pain, go for it.
Okay for doctors, airline pilots, bus drivers, taxi drivers, crane operators, cops, firemen? Just asking.
Unexplained weight gain?
It’s somewhat beneficial for several medical conditions, most notably to help prevent nausea and wasting in patients undergoing chemo and radiation. Relieves eye pressure in glaucoma patients.
That said, so-called “medical marijuana” is just a front for broader legalization.

Yes.
If they're dealing with chronic pain and aren't using it when they're on duty, why not?
Anything that helps people who suffer from severe pain, nausea related to chemotherapy, and glaucoma is fine w/me! Let those who are so vigorously opposed to these meds refuse them when offered to them.
Sure it does. Who cares, right?
In critical situations, of course not for those professions. Although on race day it does provide intense, non-distracted focus on the task ahead of you.
Took a “scab” job in my youth while on strike with the USW. (I’m not a union member now, but I was twenty-something in the late seventies)
We were building a bank in Northern VA DC suburbs. Lunch time to these guys meant 30 minutes to smoke as much dope and drink as much beer as they could.
The crane operator sent me to his truck to get some tallboys. I said I don’t think I should be doing that! (Guys were riding the crane up and stepping off at floors off the crane ball and hook.)
Those ironworkers were some crazy mfers.
I was glad to get back to the shipyard.
Yes if you keep everybody stoned, they won’t complain about the taxes so much. ‘Course, they won’t be able to pay them, either. ‘Course, what do the libs care, they don’t pay them anyway, and the people who run the show are too damned stoned to notice or care that they can’t pay the bills they’re running up...
Lord Obie’s next Incontrovertible Executive Edict from the Office of the Czar of Doobies: EVERYBODY MUST GET STONED!
It is all he has left.
If he legalizes pot or calls off the DEA in a Federal decriminalization edict, his base will revere him for all time and he and the donks will get re-elected.
Caveat: I agree w/Sarah that smoking pot is not a big deal.
I have MS. In states where medical marijuana is legal, some MS patients on the MS forums I read report they’re able to get rid of many of their symptomatic meds by using small doses of marijuana. I’m sure it’s much better on the liver and kidneys than most of the drugs we pop for our symptoms. Some of them smoke it, but many of them mix it into butter or brownies and ingest it, with the same results.
Let the pot users flame me, but this is another classic scientific finding to be used politically to pander for a voter class, ie, pot users.
Not quite the same. There is a remarkable sense of nonchalant apathy about everything that comes with pot, and it has a different quality than alcohol abuse. It’s like Carlin’s routine about painkillers at the dentists’—”You still feel the pain, you just don’t give a s**t.”
nostrums? like stuff you put in your nostrils?
just kidding of course.
