Now you can the flames from Oakland.

Looks like a burning gas main to me, that continuous roaring orange flame. That's what I thought, too. I'm listening to local news -- witnesses reported a roaring sound just before the explosion.
Sounds like a gas main rupture, followed by ignition of the vapor cloud.

Now that the gas company has confirmed it’s a gas leak can we change the title?

Firefighters will tell you brick can burn too. It’s just a lot harder.

I would think that depends on the pressure of the line.
There’s also petroleum pipelines (gas, jet fuel, etc.).
Whatever the fuel, the flames are at least a couple of hundred feet high not “60 feet”.

Thanks, hope she’s okay. I have another friend there, but think her house is okay. She’s a block away from a fire station there, and reports are the fire station is okay. I’ve been here 23 years, and never saw a fire like this. Lots of trees here, heavily wooded in San Bruno, so I hope they can contain it.

I have been looking for natural gas lines maps. the ones I have arent detailed but show major lines in that approximate are. Local news puts the location in Crestmoor Canyon, if that helps.

Completely unrelated, but wasn't there a plot a while back to blow up gas lines under airport in NYC area? Haven't thought about it in a while, till now.

This is a tragedy. There could be many fatalities. Can we save the banter for later?
