Auto sales: Worst August since 1983

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- The nation's top automakers reported disappointing sales Wednesday, resulting in the worst August for industrywide auto sales in 27 years.

According to sales tracker Autodata, U.S. new vehicle sales fell just short of 1 million vehicles, a drop of 21% from a year ago, which included Cash for Clunkers. That federal program created a sugar rush of sales by dangling an incentive of up to $4,500 in cash for buyers who traded in older gas guzzlers for more efficient models.

This pic sums the whole thing up. Look what was for sale then and now. There isn’t one thing you are inspired or excited to buy. 1983 gave us the Renault LE CAR and 2010 gives us the Obama Cruze. Depressing.

IIRC a 2 year old car is the optimum purchase.

Look for that “sweet spot” an you can probably hit your $10K budget,

Now, is there anyone out there that can tell me about the Mini Cooper?

Fun as heck to drive, not nearly as reliable as the Japanese makes, and unimpressive fuel economy for its size. The dealers are all BMW stores so they know how to treat customers well but they also aren't used to cutting deals.

A brief look at edmunds.com a few days ago gave me the idea that the large car companies really didn’t want to sell cars. it was kind of this is our price take it or leave it - oh hum.IMHO

I have two drivers one with 250K and one with 167K miles so I was looking.

Thanks. How about road noise? I don’t have a dealer near me and I will not buy one for about a year... just looking at this point.

Ha. That is the best example of 1983 yet. You should have kept it because you could be in the company of these fools:

Road noise - not bad for a small car - a lot depends on how aggressive the tire tread is.

There are only 85 dealers in the US - BMW did this to avoid price competition between dealers.

I’d suggest finding a nearby used one to test drive, use craigslist, ebay, or carmax for possible ones.

That’s what we are doing. We bought new SUVs during the past couple of years, and we are gonna pay them off, then drive them until they literally fall apart. No ‘new’ cars for us. Trading in every couple or so years has to be one of the biggest wastes of money there is!

Imagine how bad it would have been if this wasn’t the summer of recovery.

------------------------

If there were ever an enemy of prosperity and opportunity for the middle class, it is the Marxist Barack Hussein Obama.

And so, we're in deep, deep economic trouble. And these liberals are going to friggin' sing and dance along, all the way, as they dance off a cliff.

WAKE UP AMERICA!

there’s no reason to not buy a ford. They didn’t take any bailout money.

In late 2005 I bought a 2003 Kia Spectra for $6,500 from a dealer, with about 30,000 miles on it. It’s currently got 108,000 miles on it, and it’s never broken down on me once. No power windows or remote door locks. Not as sexy as a Mustang, but it does the job.

You’re paying cash so you can get the price you want (as long it’s a reasonable offer). Tell the salesman you are paying cash. If the salesman won’t accept your offer at the moment, walk away and say, “someone is going to get this money—the one who agrees to my price.” It’s a buyer’s market these days.
