WASHINGTON (AFP) US Attorney General Eric Holder was Tuesday to meet with religious leaders from across all faiths to discuss ways to stem a wave of attacks against Muslims and mosques.
The talks would examine measures the Department of Justice "can take against rising anti-Muslim hate and acts of violence and intimidation against American Muslims," the broad coalition said in a press release.
The 4:00 pm (2000 GMT) meeting comes as an evangelical church in Florida vowed to press ahead with plans to burn a Koran on Saturday, to mark the ninth anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks.
Anti-Muslim tensions also appear to have been rising after a Muslim group proposed building an Islamic cultural center near Ground Zero, the site where the World Trade Center once stood before it was destroyed in the 9/11 attacks.
The coalition called on Holder to make a strong statement underscoring the US government's commitment to religious freedom and condemning hate crimes.
"Religious leaders encourage the Department of Justice to be highly visible and unceasingly bold in protecting the guarantees of the constitution for minorities as well as for the majority," said Interfaith Alliance president Welton Gaddy in a statement.
"Having spoken to many families across the country over the last few weeks, I have heard many Muslim Americans say they have never felt this anxious or this insecure in America since directly after September 11," Ingrid Mattson, head of the Islamic Society of North America, told a press conference.
She was flanked by the other religious leaders who were to meet Holder later in the day in a coordinated show of support.

“...to stem a wave of attacks against Muslims and mosques.”
I wonder where this is happening?

What Muslims and Mosques are being attacked, burning Korans is not attacking a mosque, nor is it attacking Muslims.
In America you can burn the flag but not the Qouran.
At Ground Zero: It’s those rabid Christianist Tea Baggers, haven’t you been reading the NYT, Newsweek and WaPo?
In America you can burn the flag but not the Qouran.
they have never felt this anxious or this insecure in America since directly after September 11,”
Neither have I.
I would bet many more Christian churches are burned and vandalized than mosques. Is the JD investigating that?
The attacks are on non Muslims and white people.
These are two groups targeted by the DOJ under this regime.
WTF!? WHAT wave of attacks? Do they now have to make up "hate crimes" (translation: thoughtcrime) to justify their shibboleth of belief that Typical Americans are haters?
I follow the news very closely. I don't know of a single case, much less a "wave."
What attacks have there been? Is this something like the black churches Clinton remembered seeing burn in the South?
Of course, the Islam-O-Dent doesn’t even know about any attacks on Jews throughout the world.
A strong and unequivocal condemnation (from every camp) of the opression carried out in Iran, Saudi Arabia and other muslim countries in the name of Islam would be a step in the right direction, in the US as well as other civilized countries. If you’re unwilling to forcefully distance yourself from Shariat, Jihad and other similar dark-age practices, as well as nations and groups practicing it, there is nothing to dicuss and you merit nothing but contempt.
Well, here’s a solution: Elect more Republicans. Then more black churches will burn. That way there will be less time for them evil Republicans to burn mosques.
Oh, just where exactly was the last mosque in the U.S that was machine-gunned or bombed by Christians? I guess that’s just one little detail our broadly tolerant AG left out.
I guess the “wave of attacks against Muslims and mosques.” is currently defined as telling the truth about the Koran, victory mosques, and Sharia.
How about the attacks on Jews, which are 8X more than the attacks on Muslims? Oh, wait—only Muslims seems to count anymore.
