Political stars born of Arizona law
Washington Times ^ | Sept. 6, 2010 | Stephen Dinan

Posted on 09/07/2010 11:46:37 AM PDT by AuntB

Immigration takes larger role in races across U.S.

Despite being waylaid by the courts, Arizona's immigration law is still growing as a powerful political force, shaping elections across the country and creating a new generation of campaign stars in and out of the state.

The law's sponsor has become a sought-after kingmaker in Republican primaries, one of the chief legal advisers is running for statewide office in Kansas, and several Arizona sheriffs backing the law have earned substantial television airtime.

Maybe the most obvious example is Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer, who has used the law to take control of her race and all but guarantee she'll win in November.

"The truth is, probably 80 to 90 percent of Americans support this bill," said state Sen. Russell Pearce, the law's chief sponsor, who has been at the forefront of Arizona's immigration fights for years ..... "I suspect this will be an issue through the presidential election in 2012. It's not going to go away."

Mr. Pearce wrote Senate Bill 1070....It was amended later by another law and then, at the end of July, altered by a federal court, which blocked key provisions.

But after years of massive illegal immigration, the law struck a chord with voters nationwide, and it joins a small set of state laws throughout the years that have gained instant nationwide recognition.

Although Mrs. Brewer has been outspoken in defending the law over the past four months, the governor was not the driving force behind the Arizona measure. It wasn't even clear that she would sign the bill until she stepped to the lectern moments before she affixed her signature.

At the time, the Arizona Republic said Mrs. Brewer was facing "a stiff primary challenge," but that situation changed the moment she signed the legislation.

Senators support illegal immigration super highway http://www.lcsun-news.com/las_cruces-opinion/ci_16005398

Sept. 7, 2010

Twenty-three Senators gave their support to a deceptive bill that will, among other things, create an illegal immigration superhighway, remove access to natural resources, and strip ranchers of their grazing rights, all under the excuse of “preserving” wilderness. 23 voted to move S.B. 1689 to the floor including, McCain, Alexander, Landrieu, and Lincoln.

A July, 2010 article:

“Members of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee gave unanimous approval today to a bill that would designate hundreds of thousands of acres in Doña Ana County as wilderness.

With that approval from 13 Democrats and 10 Republicans, the Organ Mountains – Desert Peaks Wilderness Act now heads to the Senate floor for a vote.”

No other Country puts up with this nonsense, and if these illegals were assumed to vote for the GOP you wouldn’t be hearing all this talk of amnesty either. That’s what it’s all about,,,,,votes,,,,,,for RATS.

Whether AZ itself wins or loses in the first court go-around, Conservatives are going to win big on this one.

It’s important to keep that in mind as this rolls forward.

Remember, we’ve won the gun-control battle, the abortion battle, we’re going to win this one, AND the muzzie battle too.

Yep!

The next thing is the liberals going after our guns, the 2nd amendment. Radio news this morning from ABC....

[snip]Study of ATF Data Says Three Of Four Guns Used in Mexican Violence Come From US Border States
New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg, a co-chair of Mayors Against Illegal Guns, noted that Congress had initially blocked the release of the ATF data used to generate the group’s new report. The data analyzed in the study was requested in 2009 and not provided till March of this year.

“This is information, previously hidden by Congress, that the public needs to see, to show how guns bought in the US are fueling the drug wars in Mexico,” said Bloomberg. “[It] again proves it is too easy for criminals and traffickers to get guns.”

Birthright Citizenship in the United States: A Global Comparison
By Jon Feere
CIS Backgrounder, August 2010
http://www.cis.org/birthright-citizenship

Excerpt: This Backgrounder briefly explains some policy concerns that result from an expansive application of the Citizenship Clause, highlights recent legislative efforts to change the policy, provides a historical overview of the development of the 14th Amendment’s Citizenship Clause, and includes a discussion of how other countries approach birthright citizenship. The paper concludes that Congress should clarify the scope of the Citizenship Clause and promote a serious discussion on whether the United States should automatically confer the benefits and burdens of U.S. citizenship on the children of aliens whose presence is temporary or illegal.

These data also cast some light on our role in Iraq, as noted below.

Behind the Pew Study on Illegal Immigration, Part II: How Many Illegals?
By Stanley Renshon
CIS Blog, September 5, 2010
http://www.cis.org/renshon/behind-pew-study-2

Excerpt: The recently released Pew report on the decline of the illegal population in the United States has garnered a lot of attention, though a great deal of it for the wrong reasons. Obama administration officials are already touting their policies to account for the decline. A DHS spokesman went even further, saying that ‘the downward trend in border crossings has continued since Obama took office in January 2009, citing Homeland Security statistics that show decreases in illegal-immigrant apprehensions during the past two years’ (emphasis mine).

A Right to Immigrate?
By Steven Camarota
CIS Blog, September 3, 2010
http://www.cis.org/Camarota/a-right-to-immigrate

Excerpt: I recently came across a paper by University of Colorado philosophy professor Michael Huemer entitled ‘Is There a Right to Immigrate?’ Huemer’s answer is clearly ‘yes,’ there is such a right. By a ‘right to immigrate’ he means the right to enter another country of one’s choosing, rather than just a right to leave one’s country. While only a tiny share of the American people would agree with Mr. Huemer, such people constitute a large share of immigration thinkers on the far left and the libertarian right. Although generally not part of the public immigration debate – few if any actual elected office holders imagine a ‘right’ to enter our country – many advocates of high immigration seem to either privately agree with Huemer or at least strongly sympathize with his position. Thus, his perspective is important, even if it is not currently discussed openly outside of academia circles. Below I list some of my objections to his formation, in no particular ! order.

ICE Caving on Secure Communities
By Jessica Vaughan
CIS Blog, September 2, 2010
http://www.cis.org/vaughan/caving-on-secure-communities

Excerpt: The San Francisco Chronicle reported today that ICE is going all wobbly in defending Secure Communities, its marquee program for identifying and removing criminal aliens.

Secure Communities ought to be one of the most uncontroversial enforcement programs ever launched. It provides for the fingerprints of all those booked into county jails to be screened against immigration databases as part of the same process by which they are screened against other criminal history databases. Launched officially in 2008, so far it has found nearly 300,000 criminal aliens, including 43,000 very serious offenders. It is in more than 500 counties nationwide. Because it is based on fingerprints, criminal aliens cannot escape detection by using aliases or by claiming U.S. citizenship. It eliminates the need for local officers to make separate, manual requests to check an inmate’s immigration status, and provides for automatic notification to the local ICE office, so they can take custody of the criminal aliens and remove them at the appropriate time. There is no cost and no additional work for the local agencies. Everyone is screened, so there is no possibil! ity of discrimination

TRAC Study Mirrors Pew’s – Aliens Less Interested in the U.S. Than Before
By David North
CIS Blog, September 2, 2010
http://www.cis.org/north/TRAC-asylum-data

Excerpt: It was probably a coincidence, but two quite different studies of alien populations were issued within 24 hours of each other, each showing that migrants appear to be less interested in the U.S. than formerly.

The more numerically significant of the two, the report of the Pew Hispanic Center, as noted in a posting by Mark Krikorian, estimated that the number of illegal aliens in the country had dropped to 11.1 million from 12.0 million two years earlier. That’s a decrease, over two years, of 7.5 percent.

If Pew Says It, It Must Be True!
By Mark Krikorian
CIS Blog, September 2, 2010
http://www.cis.org/krikorian/pew-illegals-estimate

Excerpt: A slew of news stories today about a new report from the Pew Hispanic Center estimating that as of March 2009, the illegal population had dropped to 11.1 million. Pew, though institutionally inclined toward amnesty and mass immigration, does honest work, and this is no exception. But many of the press reports are treating this as momentous, previously unknown news when, in fact, it’s already been reported — twice.

By Jessica Vaughan
CIS Blog, August 31, 2010
http://www.cis.org/vaughan/from-sanctuary-to-safer-city

Excerpt: The police union in Houston, a former sanctuary city, is taking a look at the experience of Phoenix, which two years ago implemented a policy to allow its officers to call ICE to report suspected illegal aliens who were connected to other crimes. The implementation of this policy, which is similar to the one signed into law by Arizona governor Jan Brewer and later blocked by U.S. District Judge Susan Bolton in response to a Justice Department lawsuit, has contributed to a steady decline in violent and property crime rates in Phoenix, without generating a single complaint of civil rights violations or racial profiling, according to officer Mark Spencer. Spencer is president of the Phoenix police union and recently gave a presentation to officers in Houston.

El Universal (Mexico City) and Frontera (Tijuana, Baja California) 9/3/10

A day’s work: Mexican Army 32, Los Zetas 0

In less than 24 hours, the Mexican Army in Nuevo Leon reduced the ranks of the mercenary killer group, Los Zetas, by 32. The first event in the thinning of the criminal organization took place in the municipality of General Trevino, Nuevo Leon, when 27 of the militant criminal group were killed in a gun battle in which the Army suffered two wounded. In that operation, three kidnap victims were freed. Less than 24 hours later, a vehicle with five gunmen was reported parked along a highway. The military responded and the ensuing gun battle ended with the five Zetas dead and the military no worse for the wear.

Four survivors of last week’s massacre now reported

A pregnant woman and her daughter survived the massacre of 72 Central Americans last week in Tamaulipas, according to an Ecuadorian who also survived, along with a Honduran. There were 76 which included a pregnant woman and her daughter that they didn’t kill, related the Ecuadorian. He didn’t know what they did with them. “There were four of us who survived. The rest were all killed,” he said. The witness, under protection in Ecuador, was wounded in the neck and left for dead at the scene of the massacre. Mexican hospitality

[Narrative of the video taped in Ecuador, as related:]

The route

I traveled from Ecuador to Honduras, from Honduras I went to Guatemala – everything was okay. I stayed in Guatemala about 15 days. It was okay. From there I went to Santa Elena. From there I crossed in a boat into Mexico.

The kidnapping

Saturday night about 10 p.m. they rounded us up into three cars. About eight well armed people came out. They rounded up all of us. We got out of the car and they put us in another car. We traveled in two cars. They took us to a house. They tied us up, hands and feet, the hands behind. They kept us there overnight.

The massacre

Afterward, they threw us face down and then I heard a sound of them shooting. I thought they were shooting off to the side, but no. I heard that they shot my friends and then they came shooting me and killed all the others. They finished shooting and left. They killed all of them.

The escape

When they left, I waited two minutes, got up and left the house. I walked all night and arrived at a light that was very far. I asked for help. Two men came out and wouldn’t help me. I went away and saw a light far off. I ran about 10 kilometers. I walked and walked in pain, asking for help. No one would help me. I walked and walked until daylight. At daylight I walked more. About 7 a.m. I saw the Marines that were there, the migra [immigration]. I went where they were and asked for help.

The Zetas

What would you say to Ecuadorians who want to leave?

That they don’t come, there are many bad people who won’t let them pass, that they don’t come anymore. Seventy-six came with me and they killed them all. I say to all Ecuadorians not to travel anymore because the Zetas are killing many people.

Deported Guatemalans without work

A study by a Guatemalan human rights organization of those deported from the meat packing plant in Potsville, Iowa in May of 2008, 64% remain without work and 36% have only temporary employment. This is a reflection of the status of most Guatemalans deported back to their own country because of Guatemala’s lack of development opportunities, the study found. “They emigrate and are exploited for their labor. On returning they are victims of the incapability of the State to reestablish them.” The study also showed that 98% of those deported from Iowa were in debt [assumption: smuggling fees], but only 12% have already paid them.

Guatemalan youth migration a worry

A Guatemalan youth study indicates that 50% of Guatemalan youths have either tried to travel illegally to the US or have thought of trying. Those that try go into debt to pay between the equivalent of $5,000 to $7,000 to “coyotes” to smuggle them north, but often are abandoned in Mexico and left to their own luck. Those who make it back home are left with huge debts and no way to pay them off. Those experiences do not seem to dissuade others from trying.

Monday 9/6/10

La Jornada (Mexico City) 9/5/10

News silence in Tamaulipas explained

Mexico, D.F. (IPS) – The Mexican northeastern state of Tamaulipas has become a black hole of organized crime. The “social disintegration” has been going on there for the past six months, but the local press is totally silenced. “We have no option, simply no option,” a reporter of a national newspaper, who asked that his identity not be revealed, said by phone to the Inter Press Service news agency. Like other reporters in the state bordering Texas, he refuses to report any criminal activities in the area.

Tamaulipas is the operating area of the Gulf drug cartel and of the violent gang known as Los Zetas, formed from military deserters previously trained in combat techniques and counterinsurgency by the CIA. “The original Zetas began executing select targets with military efficiency and economy of bullets,” said IPS reporter Jorge Luis Sierra, a specialist in security and militarization. “But the excesses began and now Los Zetas are no longer old army deserters, but mixed units of civilians, police, ex-military and hired killers from other groups that carry out three strategies together: as narcos, as terrorists and as guerrillas, all at the same time,” he added.

In reference to the recent massacre of 72 Central and South American migrants in Tamaulipas, presumably by Los Zetas, Sierra explains that Los Zetas never justify their actions. Their “communicational policy” is the act itself. On the other hand, their enemies are using psychological tactics of combat, like car bombs. In this sense, he conjectures, it is possible that a rival gang “killing 72 immigrants and attributing it to Los Zetas could be an act of propaganda and form part of a strategy of psychological warfare,” to exterminate Los Zetas from the area.

The center’s equipment allows real-time surveillance of petroleum, hydraulic, telecommunications and electrical buildings and installations. The data banks are kept current and allow for effective real-time analyses from police reports throughout the Republic.

This author does a pretty good job of dissecting the language of which guns they were using to develop their statistics. First, the gun had to be recovered in the crime, then it had to be submitted “for tracing.” Start with a warped dataset and end up with a warped conclusion.

The Price John McCain Paid Per Vote on Tuesday (Literally)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

So, considering the $21 million cost of his campaign, the septuagenarian maverick paid approximately $74.64 per vote.

To put this desperation in perspective, McCain's 2008 presidential campaign spent $293 million for 58.3 million votes, averaging $5.03 per lever-pull. For his 1982 congressional campaign, McCain spent $550,000 for 89,116 votes, or $13.54/vote in inflation-adjusted dollars.

Of course, McCain still has to defeat Democrat Rodney Glassman in November to keep his Senate seat — but he probably won't break a sweat while doing so. Our advice to the heavily unfavored newcomer: start buying lottery tickets immediately.
