Petraeus Condemns U.S. Church's Plan to Burn Qurans
Wall Street Journal ^ | September 6, 2010 | JULIAN E. BARNES And MATTHEW ROSENBERG

KABUL—The top U.S. commander in Afghanistan said the planned burning of Qurans on Sept. 11 by a Florida church could put the lives of American troops in danger and damage the war effort.

Gen. David Petraeus said the Taliban would exploit the demonstration for propaganda purposes, drumming up anger toward the U.S. and making it harder for allied troops to carry out their mission of protecting Afghan civilians.

"It could endanger troops and it could endanger the overall effort," Gen. Petraeus said in an interview with The Wall Street Journal. "It is precisely the kind of action the Taliban uses and could cause significant problems. Not just here, but everywhere in the world we are engaged with the Islamic community."

I guess you are appalled at all that WWI and WWII government backed propaganda which cast the German Empire in WWI and the Japanese/Hitler led Nazis in a constant state of ridicule.

Motives are easy to figure out (Since the 7th century) yet we treat these creatures with kid gloves. It is time for that to stop and get out if you are not willing to to heavy wet work on these people, "Civis" included. We are actually paying civis not to plant IEDs and also subsidizing their "opium fields". It is extremely pathetic how our military/civilian leaders have evolved from action oriented conquest, to the desperate appeasement mode. This worked wonders during Muhammad ibn 'Abdullāh campaign to you use his enemies "tolerance" against them as a military tactic. Fear is what is effective against those who wish Western Civilization eradicated.

“””You have obviously have never served in the Military or otherwise you would know that the safety of the troops are the first concern of the general, especially General Petraeus”””

Sorry Kaslin, I cannot agree with you on this one. If winning is not the first concern of a general, then that general needs to be replaced pronto. Otherwise, that general is endangering his troops by not giving orders to kill the enemy.

Let’s try it this way, please try to follow: you postulate that Petraeus has “changed.” Is there any evidence that he tolerated, favored, or even promoted the burning of the Koran in Iraq?

Perhaps if we also allow the Muzzies to build a Muslim war memorial, er, mosque at Ground Zero, the Taliban won't get mad at us and try and kill our soldiers?

Methinks the good General is worrying a bit too much about enemy "feelings" and a bit too little about the center piece of the enemy's ideology and motivation?

Or maybe his boss told him he'd better ride to the rescue of the White House's favorite religion, or else?

As our Supreme Reader opined, they have the right to do it, but I question the wisdom of doing it.

They real question is why should Petraeus be the spokesan on this issue? What happened to our CIC who should be the point man. There is no doubt that Petraeus must have cleared this with the WH. Obama is MIA on this one and we can all figure out why.

Several years ago, some Palestinians took over a Christian church in Bethlehem. While they occupied the church, the muslims trashed the place and used pages of the Bible for toilet paper.

Did General Petraeus speak out then? Do I hear the sound of crickets?

It is a self righteous spiritual stunt in the same vein as snake handling and demonstrates the doctrinal admirability of the Westboro Baptist Church.

Why is Petraeus wanting not to ‘offend’ our enemy?

Besides, it’s just some books. If the Taliban or Islamic ‘community’ were to burn a bunch of Bibles, we could just laugh at their symbolic attempt. After all, we can print more of them.

BUT, they burn Christian churches, and the people and Bibles in them. Shouldn’t we be the ones offended?

And why is our mission “protecting Afghan civilians” instead of killing these nasty little b*strds dead?

You're referring to the major difference between COIN (counterinsurgency) and counterguerilla. The Army is fully invested in COIN, especially after Iraq.

And you are being ... not dense ... full of air, light, frothy, having no weight ... insubstantial, transparent ... easy to see through ... shall I go on?

You got nothing. Come back when you do.
