KABULThe top U.S. commander in Afghanistan said the planned burning of Qurans on Sept. 11 by a Florida church could put the lives of American troops in danger and damage the war effort.
Gen. David Petraeus said the Taliban would exploit the demonstration for propaganda purposes, drumming up anger toward the U.S. and making it harder for allied troops to carry out their mission of protecting Afghan civilians.
"It could endanger troops and it could endanger the overall effort," Gen. Petraeus said in an interview with The Wall Street Journal. "It is precisely the kind of action the Taliban uses and could cause significant problems. Not just here, but everywhere in the world we are engaged with the Islamic community."

Dear Taliban ... You rebuild the 1700 year old statues, we'll stop burning Korans ... then we can debate it. Go tend to your poppy fields. (While they exist!)
Don't you see that we are going down a slippery slope if we starting prohibiting everything the radical islamists get upset about? Where does that end?
If that’s all it takes to shatter those relationships then there wasn’t much substance to them to begin with.
I will stand with you as we are pilloried.
Absolutely true. GEN Petraeus is an Iraq expert. Afghanistan is VERY different, and I can only hope during his tenure as CENTCOM commander he became an Afghanistan expert. GEN Petraeus may be a politician, but he is anything but stupid and I would hope that he's not forcing a square peg into a round hole.
Petraeus main accomplishment was to make the first formal accommodation with Sunni insurgents.
He hired the guns away from AQI and turned them against each other while we provided air support. I wasn't too crazy about that idea either considering the American blood on those guys' hands, but you can't argue with success. It was a brilliant move that worked like a charm.
Then get them out of the field because people are going to have opinions about Muslims and some of those opinions aren't going to be positive.
A church burning Korans is not going to convert Muslims. They should be out preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ if they feel led to undermine Islam.
While I understand Gen. Petraeus desire to protect our troops, and agree that the Taliban will use this action for their own propoganda, it seems Gen. Petraeus has far more powerful tools within his means to accomplish the same goal.........open up the Rules of Engagement to allow our Marines to actually kill the Taliban and push them out of these regions.....once and for all.
We are losing troops because of ROE’s that are designed to win the hearts and minds of the Afghani’s. Issuing press releases about some crazy church exerting their freedoms in America is fine, but those are just words. How about some real action to protect our troops?
Just like we "won" in Vietnam after we pulled out of there.
How many Nazis did Patton have fighting for him?
It’s a political cult - plain, simple, obvious.
I wasn’t too crazy about that idea either considering the American blood on those guys’ hands, but you can’t argue with success. It was a brilliant move that worked like a charm.”
Agreed.
But, seriously, why is he so out to lunch on A-stan? Why do you think? Political? Ambition? There’s something real wrong here. He’s marking time and this blood is gonna get them nothing else.
i keep hearing libs says its muslims constitutional right to put a mosque at ground zero
Well then I say its christian’s constututional right to burn the kuran.
Excellent retort. The General is right to be concerned about his soldiers.....but with existing ROE he contradicts that concern.
So which is the priority of the warfighter sir—killing our enemy or caring for the local populace? Silence....
Just asking.
American right.
Your stupid rules of engagement General is what is killing our troops. You need to man up and tell it like it is. Turn the troops loose, and get this damn war over with.
Likely true.
However, there is a certain fittingness to it.
Though maybe taking a sword to it would be even more fitting.
But according to the 0bama administration, burning Bibles is ok:

>He doesnt want to see his troops put in unnecessary danger. Its pretty rational.
LOL! Good thing we didn’t think like that in WWII
We would be speaking Japanese right now.
A script?
